Even DOT3 would work just fine. I believe the only difference in DOT3 and DOT4 is the boiling point.

Making sure once again because it sounded like you missed a step...

You can take the nut off of that rod and twist the rod. With your hand. The rod will back out of the master cylinder to give you more play. Just make sure that it doesn't fall out of the master cylinder. Once the rod has been twisted out a couple of turns, put the nut back on.
