Its directed towards anyone questioning the maintenance I perform on my cars, including you or anyone else. These cars break enough on their own, there is no reason to skimp on something so cheap and easy as drivetrain fluids.

Not true, I'm sure if he wasn't messing it wouldn't have broken. Their owners break them, then others find reasons as to why it broke... like tranny fluid.

Power and beating/racing/driving cars aggressively will wear a car's drivetrain out, all you can do is fix it when it breaks.

That's what I thought. People bad-mouth Mitsu but if you beat on any car then it's going to break, whether that's from the high temps of road course or the jolt of a 1/4 mile run.

People just don't mod their family sedans or drive them that way. I've had stock clutches last over 100k miles on more than one car. How many Evo VIII's have their original clutches right now?

Min lasted 38k: 21k miles stock, 9k miles@266whp/240wtq, 8k miles @305-320whp/300-320wtq, and about 10 parking lot launches. The parking lot launches are what ultimately killed it. I drive aggressive too, but ultimately, launching kills stock clutches faster than anything else.

I gotta say though, I didn't realize that 4th gear on DSMs pooped out at 400wtq. Suck.

Yeah, at these power levels, the trans case actually starts flexing, causing the gears from the counter shaft and input shaft to pull away from each other. Now the gear contact is on a weaker part of the tooth. Its why I shimmed up my counter shaft and input shaft up tighter to help prevent this, but does put more load on the bearings obviously.

Haha are you implying I was skimping? I used what I thought/felt was a good fluid. 2 years ago John Shep said that fluid was fine. And I highly doubt this failed because of fluid choice. I actually never liked the Redline cocktail. I do have redline heavyduty shockproof in he rear end and transfer case!



Anyways, I will eventually pull the tranny, ship it to Shep. If it's an arm and a leg, I'll just throw a stock tranny on. If it just costs an arm, I might spend a leg too and turn it into a "stage 4"

Or maybe I could just try to fix it myself hahaha. I've taken one of these apart nicely, it wasn't a big deal. Putting it back together and shimming it right, another story...

Not at all. From what I can tell it seems like you take care of your car, and like you said you were going based on information you thought was good from a supposedly reliable source.

I honestly for the life of me can't figure out why Shep continues to recommend the BG Synchroshit II for people to use. Its too thin and it sheers far too easily to properly protect a transmission. Fast shifting with perfect synchros? Yes. Long-term durability and protection? No.

Uh Shep does not recommend BG Syncroshift.

There are several gear oils that will work depending on horsepower or intended use. For most transmissions we recommend Redline MT90 or Pennzoil Synchromesh. For drag use or high horsepower cars please contact us. Please let us know if you need any Redline gear oil.

I run two quarts of Mt-90 for friction modifier, and two quarts of lightweight shockproof. Overfilled on purpose so that the gears dont pull the sump dry from using thicker lubricant. I may run Heavyweight in the summer.

Even if Shep recommended Syncroshift, I wouldn't use it but on a stock dsm.

Good to see he finally changed his recommendation! That Penzoil stuff is no good either though b/c it sheers just as badly (its a GM fluid designed for a specific truck transmission).
