You meant valve seats right?

...cause bad valve seals do not make their presence known during a compression test, only a leakdown test, right?

Re: Compression Test Results
Valve seals are not in the area that compression happens, so no on leak down test also.

Re: Compression Test Results
A leakdown test would be usefull to tell you which was the problem between the rings or the valves. I can always run the new snakey borescope in and see if you don't just have some really crusty exhaust valves or similar if you wanted.

Re: Compression Test Results
Another issue is the quality of the compression gauge being used, and have you floored the throttle during your test? I would trust a Snap-On or similar compression gauge, not some $35 checker unit. Also the next step would be a leak down test, also a Snap-On or similar gauge should be used.

Thanks for talking to me like I'm a dumbass. I used a Craftsman compression tester. It worked fine; it did what it was designed to do. I did have the throttle at WOT while I turned the engine over during the test. I've been planning on doing a leakdown test ever since I did the compression test. My uncle, who is a mechanic, has a Snap On leak down tester. He, like every other mechanic at my work, has a vast array of Snap-On and MAC tools. I've used many, and I still like "el cheapo" Craftsman. I asked him awhile ago to do a leakdown test for me, but we have not set an exact date to do it. And if necessary, I can just go to QPR.

Re: Compression Test Results
Don't blame John for that. You should have stated that you did that during the test. How are we supposed to know how much experience you have?? There are a lot of new guys on the board lately, and most don't know a whole lot. You joined around the same time as them, but you happen to have a better background. Most of us don't know that.
Let us know how the leakdown goes.

Re: Compression Test Results
Sleepy I did not talk to you like you are an idiot, I do not know you, I have no idea what you know about cars. So I am sorry if I offended you, I was simply stating that Snap-On or similar Compression and leakdown testers will give you more accurate and consistant test results, this is why I recommended them over the cheaper units.

Re: Compression Test Results
You can convert your craftsman gauge into a leak down tester....

Sorry, I took it as an insult.
And I'm getting the leakdown tester tomorrow. I will post the results ASAP. Thanks for all your opinions, and suggestions (especially the ones I took offensively haha).
