Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I have since called them...they wouldn't do anything...my insurance agent is trying to find the guy to see if we can do anything.

Police basically said you need to take care of this yourself...and i asked even though the guy is illegally driving around without insurance...yes they said.

Wow that's BS. Cops are so worthless and are willing to take zero initiative. At least in TX if you're caught w/o car insurance your vehicle is towed on the spot.

Lesson learned about filing police reports, then? Especially since you were injured...

Saw your motor out of the car. Big holes on both sides of the block.

^really? Wish Danny would've called, i would've swung up there. I guess tomorrow i will go.

Yea, lesson learned. I just wanted to get to work so I didn't want to deal with it.

No more trusting people, i will file a police report from now on.

You should've snapped some pics.

I thought about it but wasn't sure if you'd been out there already or not. I also wanted to get to Wagners before everyone left.

Danny was working on that nice truck. It was the younger guy working on your car. Not sure of his name?

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Great news! My luck turned a bit today...the head and turbo are both in great shape...the head is just slightly scuffed on the cylinder that went done but Danny said it isn't a big deal to steel wool and have their machinist clean it up too.

Motor pics...ouch time! (taken from two different cameras, one was the iphone, both don't have a flash, sorry no money for a camera now, lol)

Other side:

3rd down, the one scuffed a bit

Two big piston chunks

NOthing went through the turbo !

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Danny said that there were no signs of detonation...fuel was good.

He said it appeared it broke on the way down, which is good and saved my head. He said it looks like the rod basically formed an S and snapped and caused the failure.

Funny, everyone says rod bolts let go on these...that end of the rod is still on there, lol.

Holy shit! So the rod bolts were fine, and the rod actually just let go? That is nasty carnage; great pics! great news on the head and turbo. Does this change your plans at all?

Yea, Danny said this just simply looks like the rods let go on the power stroke, basically classic too much power/torque. He said he saw not signs of detonation and yea the bottom half of the rod can still spin on the crank

It changes it some yes...my head will be getting DB's machinist's race porting when he is in there for putting the oversized valves in and assembling my head. My head should flow rather well after all is said and done Especially with the GSC S2's.

Otherwise the turbo being fine and the being fine are just bonus's. I was planning on the head being bad for sure, which is 1000 for the core roughly, so i will use that money for supplying other parts of the build that i added in like the new turbo.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I just took a look at it and it doesn't really look like it was a knock/detonation problem. The 3 other cylinders look mint, there isn't aluminum build up in the combustion chamber of the cylinder that took a shit, all the spark plugs look fine except for the one being covered in oil in the bad cylinder.

Rod bolts usually will usually break/stretch from high RPMs when the pistons pull on them on the up stroke and rods usually bend on the down/compression stroke or on the up stroke when you suck in water/blow a HG and fill the cylinder with coolant.

So you are thinking just too much torque/power for the stock rods to handle it?

Unless it was an oiling problem and it spun a rod bearing and didn't hear it and once the bearing was totally gone the rod stuck to the crank and beat the up the block.

Would it of been making noise if this happened? Just curious for next time, with my luck this won't be my last motor, lol.

Well unbolt the end of the rod that's left on there and see what it looks like, that would solve that mystery pretty quick, unless it was damaged when the rod snapped.

It would be making the ever popular rod knock noise.

Hmmm, sounds bad...any vids of said noise, i haven't heard that obviously. I am guessing myself or lomker would've heard that if my car was making it.
