Hmmm, I guess I am used to driving the open down pipe dsm that I didn't think an open dump was loud at all. Now I might have a differen opinion even though I don't really get on it very often any more.

Rope method seems like its pretty easy and fail safe. I would have to take off one of the manifolds which doesn't seem like a big deal. Or would you have to take off both for the rope method to really work and make sure nothing got left behind?

I think I might know what you're talking about. I think we might have something like that in my garage my dad bought. I'll have to look into it!

Hmmmmmm. The other manifold/o2 housing seems like a cheaper option haha. Just kind of looking at my options at the moment. First thing is cams and timing belt. I'm already getting ahead of my self, new cars are exciting!

If you cannot track down the tool you need to remove the valve springs with the head on the car, you're welcome to borrow mine - it works awesome!

You don't have to take off any manifolds, just use the coated rope that doesn't leave any particulates.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Nothing too exciting but figured any little update is fun.

Last weekend I lightly smoked the front turn signals on the front fenders. Would've gone darker but ran out of night shades. I'll end up smoking them a little darker when I pick some more up and smoke the rear side reflectors that are on the side of the rear bumper too. Also took out the blue neons from under the dash. Installed my 50psi aem boost gauge and sensor instead of the 35psi one that was in there since I had it laying around from my old gsx. Then finished wiring up the wideband in it. Thing runs rich as hell and really needs a retune. Need to look into how to wire up the gauges to the ecu so I can log them. Still learning how to search the evo forums since it is so much bigger than the dsm forums, I'm still an evo forum n00b. Then need to pick up a cable to log with.

Just picked up a gruppe-s guage pod so hopefully that'll be here next week!

Also probably pick up some GSC S2 cams this weekend. Undecided on what springs to run though. I'll probably go with the GSC springs/retainers or the kiggly ones. Any recommendations?

I will do the 60k maintenance on it in a few weekends while I do the cam install. Then go get a tune from the amazing Shane!

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Had Shane @ DB Performance order a set of the GSC S2's and their springs! Thanks Shane!

Also ordered up a set of the jdm replica tails as there is no way I'm paying through the nose for a real set of the jdm ones and I hate the stock evo8 tails.

My gauge pod should also be waiting for me when I get home today

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Going to be installing the cams/springs on March 5/6 since I got the weekend off from my second job.

Installed the Gruppe-S gauge pod and love the look of it and fitment. Quality part, just need another guage to fill the opening.

Also got my jdm replica tails on and took a picture halfway though. I love the look of them over the stockers, feel like less of a ricer!

Ordered a set of the seat lowering brackets as well. Hopefully those will be here this week. I'm excited as I feel like I'm driving a truck sometimes the way the stock seats are.

A basic set of springs will help this dramatically. Throw on a set of Eibachs or Swifts, get an alignment, and no more truck feeling (or stock wheel gap). Def a great candidate to go on the 'basic mods' list for a car like this.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Thanks!

Would you recommend throwing on some springs on the stuck struts?

I was thinking of getting the swift spec R springs but those seem a little much for what I want to do with this thing. Looking around the Eibachs look a little cheaper than the Swifts. Would the Eibachs be good enough for a dailly driver that might hit a road course or the drag strip once or twice?

Totally. All of the above are a progressive-wound spring which means in general they'll be as nice or nicer ride than stock springs for basic DD duty. The eibachs are indeed cheaper and I'd say they're perfect for what you described if you're just looking for a basic 'even' drop and not a huge change in the dynamics of the car. The swifts do a raked drop, which will put a tish more pressure on the front of the car but for real-world purposes you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference, esp if you're main focus is to just have some light-hearted fun in the car.

I had the eibachs on my evo8 and I have eibachs on my X, they're a very nice spring. You and I seem to have a similar mentality towards the use of our evos, so that's why I think they'd be a good fit for ya. Swifts are a teeeensy bit stiffer, and the spec-r's are actually remarkably forgiving for as stiff as they are rated (remember, they're progressive). All of the above are dandy on stock struts. MattD has the spec-r's on his car if you wanna go for a test-ride. Rosey has the eibachs on his car. A few other locals have the regular swifts but I do not recall who at the moment, we installed probably 10 sets of springs in the last few years in my garage and they're kinda a blur as to who has what at this point

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Installed a GrimmSpeed phenolic intake manifold spacer this week. Very nice piece and a bunch of cool guys over there! Every little bit helps, as long as I don't pay through the nose for it. Also hoping to get my lowering seat brackets today in the mail and install those this weekend. One of the things I'm really looking forward to!

Also a random picture showing off my knock off tails. As nobody likes reading a project thread without pictures... I think.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

Thanks dude!

Ummm I think I'll probalby make a pass or two but the thing isn't anything crazy so I'd get rocked. I'm still kind of curious how slow this thing really is so it'll be fun to get it out there once.

I'd really like to take it on a road course though, I think that'd be where this thing starts to get really fun.

Knock-off tails FTW!

I had a blast running low 14s last year pre-tune. Car was way too rich above 5k and made no power. Doesn't matter how slow you are, you'll have fun. You should join us in dominating the autox.

14s?

I think auto-x is where the evo shines, it might want a bit more power for road racing, but i've never done it so thats just a speculation.

Either way I want a evo.

Re: '03 BBY Evo

I guess the goal is to run 11's, make 400awhp at DB at some point, and be reliable. It made 36x at RS where it was tuned last so I'm hoping to be kind of close to 400 after the cams and a Shane tune, maybe like 370-380 realistically.

If I could go back I'd probably keep my 2g and just pick up a nice reliable daily. It's really sucky to do anything to your daily on a weeknight and know you have no other way to get to work the next morning if it doesn't go as planned. Also trying to push the limits on something just doesn't seem smart when its your only car. haha

Keep your 1g and make it a beast if you still have it and then just get something somewhat nice as a daily! It's less stressful.

It sounds like you have realistic, achieveable goals.

Are you sticking to pump gas?
I gotcah, and that makes sense! They are pretty fun cars for a daily driver with 4 doors.

It is actually already tuned on e85 from the previous owner. It gets absolute shit for mileage at like 11-13 so I'm hoping that'll get a little bit better once I get a tune from Shane.
