FWIW.... I drove one to florida and back .... got 37mpg (sweet), but I hated driving it. the transmission was annoying and it had kinda bad blind spots... imho. BUT eveyone is different.. thats why I say drive a bunch of stuff, I know everyone won't have the same likes/dislikes I do when driving a car.

I've just started looking into it. IT sounds like you get basically the same maybe a little better mpg but more power (depending on how happy your foot is..) with stage 1, but if you take out the emissions stuff you def see a gain in mpg, but thats prob not something I'd do under warranty or free maintance period.

Re: Need New DD...~15k
My g/f's brother has a 09 GTI and we had his car for 7 months while he was in the navy boot camp... Such a nice car, had it from Nov-May, so experienced whatever winter we had last year. haha
It wasnt all dolled up inside, nothing to fancy but it did have power everything and factory HEATED CLOTH seats! I've never seen that before but its pretty amazing when you jump in during the winter and you dont have the cold leather but still have heated seats.
Got high 30's for gas mileage running back and forth to the cities from Winona (250mi round trip) and it was very comfortable and roomy.
My other option I was looking at was a 06-07 Mazdaspeed6. AWD - turbo 2.3L 6spd manual. Very nice cars that can be had in the price range of 16-22k with lower miles. They are just a little harder to find.

Re: Need New DD...~15k
I love my wife's Jetta GLI. I dd'd it a lot when the evo was borked. intake, chip, and ebay downpipe and it is fun as hell.
It's only FWD but with a set of general altimax arctics on it it is a freaking beast in the snow. It has the DSG option so sitting in epic winter traffic is a piece of cake.
A4 would be another option and get you AWD, you could also go avant and go wagon style for hauling evo parts. $15k will probably get you a ~2005 B6 maybe a B7 with 60k+ miles.

^Eh, none are blowing up my skirt. The silver sedan one is alright.
Not sure how hard it is to get them to your lot but I'd test drive it at a minimum.

I just gotta call down there Friday and make sure it's available, then go pick it up. I'll have it here Saturday for you, as long as it hasn't sold.

If you go with a GTI, get the DSG "auto" (aka clutchless manual) versus the standard manual, perfect daily driver!

Browsing craigslist and came across this... Silver even, like you said you might be interested before.

I think it looks nice and right around that price range. Its a 2012 and only has 3400 miles on it! Sweet car!

15k price range? That car is 25k... lol
You need to narrow down the features you want the car to have. Is AWD something you need, econo, a bit luxury, how high of miles. Go drive all suggested and cross some off your list. Thats just how you have to do it.

Re: Need New DD...~15k
Whatever you do, do not get a Mazda 3, my buddy just got one last year and its the worst piece of shit in the snow I have ever seen.
I like the Audi's and Volvo's as well, but a little cheaper option would be a Subaru Impressa or similar, good AWD system, good gas mileage, and still fairly fun to drive. Shit even a used WRX would be decent.

Re: Need New DD...~15k
You might also want to check out the Suzuki SX4. They're the most affordable AWD vehicle on the American car market. I have them practically new for close to that price. Or can get you a brand new manual for a hair over 16.

Re: Need New DD...~15k
I'll report back after this weekend of test driving.
Right now there are too many things I am not sure on.
AWD is a plus to me, but a big plus. More important are ~30mpg+ freeway and lower miles. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something with a lot of miles. I'd pay a bit more for less miles. Luxury isn't really important, blue tooth would be awesome, but leather and big seats and huge back seat etc isn't. I rarely have people in the back seat so I don't care about that.

Used, I'd say the Golf Diesel as well. New, the Kia or Hyundai, both are awesome cars for the money. I wouldn't buy one used though since they are only a grand or two less, same goes for Hondas and Toyotas and you're 10 year warranty gets chopped drastically being the second owner.

It's really quite insane how well VW Diesels seem to hold their value.
