Re: Project Lex
Lol, I wish. Teh Bean is sitting in a pole barn in Hudson for the winter, and will remain untouched. My efforts and money are going towards our wedding and house hunting over the next year now.

Re: Project Lex
oof dah. $3,500 for a getrag? When the time comes an R154 may be a much cheaper option. They seem pretty damn stout.

Re: Project Lex
This is why the tranny thing has been such a hard choice for me. I've been debating different options for damn near a year now.
1) Getrag 6spd - strong as hell, but lots of $$$ even for a 100k mile used one.
2) R154 5spd - somewhat strong if built right but I'd compare it to a built DSM tranny (just a matter of time before it wears down or explodes), less $$$
3) Built Supra 4spd - Somewhat strong (~800hp), lots of $$$ to do it right, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing)
4) GM 4spd (4L80e) - Would be awesome, but lots of $$$, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing)
5) GM 3spd (TH350/400) - Strong, less $$$ than 4spd but still a good chunk of $$$, only 3 speeds sucks, not sure how to sync it's shifting with Megasquirt (pull timing)
What would make it easier if I just do like brownman said and bought an NSX for a street toy, then just turned this into a pure drag queen. Then I'd just rock an Auto 2spd or 3spd and be done

Re: Project Lex
I know a few locals up here that make good power and are on high mile stock R154's. I think Dan with the blue supra still has his original trans in his 2JZ swap mk3, and he has made over 550whp for years and years. Steve Keeney is still running his stocker isn't he? I know he pooped a trans last year, but I thought that one was junk when he got it or something like that. Steve would be the guy to talk to though, he is toyotanos on forums

Re: Project Lex
Street cars are more fun than drag cars IMHO...I guess I've never owned one but it seems like a LOT of work and money for not a ton of payback...more fun to just build a fun street car and then just go see how it does on the drag strip.

Re: Project Lex
I agree with scheides drag cars don’t give you a ton of payback. You cannot go wrong if you have both! I still drive my talon on the street, mainly to work and back, it’s still fun to drive on the street. It never breaks on the street but is plagued at the track.

Yeah I've talked with Steve a bit, he swung over here once also. Nice guy. But at 600-700hp levels (where I'm hoping to be), most people I've talked to with 1st hand experience say that an R154 will only be a matter of time.

It is a street car at this point, and a street car it will remain unless someday in the future I get a 2nd car that can be a street toy.

Re: Project Lex
No big update, but she's officially back home and out of storage. Going to do an oil change and start driving her around when it's nice out. No plans for any more mods at this point as my hands are already full with wedding planning and the new house.

Re: Project Lex
Changed the oil with the finest oil and filter available. OK maybe not, just the cheapest stuff that was on sale at Oreilly's Lol... She's ready for 2012, don't really plan on touching a thing!

Re: Project Lex
Tiny update. I decided since the clutch has been holding really well lately, to install my MBC. I turned it all the way down (open), then just gave it a couple turns to tighten in. It appears I'm now at a steady 13psi (was at more like 10 creeping to 12 before).
Clutch is holding fine, but I no longer have traction in 2nd gear, lol. Whatever, I think I may just start slowly turning it up little by little over awhile until I find the point where the clutch starts slipping and then back it off a little. I need to get some sort of LSD in this thing someday...

Re: Project Lex
OMG!
2JZ is so sexy. I should just put one in my car or wait, I will record you doing pulls and listen to them while I drive my car!!
I hope it holds 15psi!

Re: Project Lex
I thought you put a new clutch in this thing last year, why would it skip? Just from abuse, design limitation, or do you have enough miles on it already that its time?
