LOL @ your welded diff...They weren't kidding when they said they welded it. That's horrible. Looking good so far! Can't wait to see the exhaust!

Re: Project S14 240sx
Looks like they just popped the cap off the diff and started welding away...New diff looks good, I bet it will drive much better now. Any pics of the exhaust installed?
Lets go find the previous owner and take turns kicking him in the balls!

I'm glad this car went to a good owner. It's a gorgeous car and it definitely is getting a makeover for the better!

Re: Project S14 240sx
The residue inside was because I had already spent an hour cutting the axle out with the sawzall before I took the pics, so it was all the metal dust from the carbide blades. That stuff was a bitch to get cleaned out, but it's good as new now! It's soooo much nicer to be able to go around a tight corner now without the car clunking, surging, and skipping the inside tire, and to be able to pull into a parking spot smoothly and quietly.
I didn't get a chance to take any pics of the exhaust installed, the car needs a wash badly before I take any new pics of it. I'll probably get them early next week.

Kevin, you need to post this on MNSC. That is absolutely unbelievable.

Re: Project S14 240sx
I am also a loss for words on this one. It worked...but
FAIL!
I am glad to see that this car is coming back from being a POS to a nice restored Nissan that will probably drive better and perform better then any of these stupid mods that were done to the car.
I am glad you had the patience to hack that out of the car. I would have tried to find another rear end...
+1 on posting this on MNSC just to show what not to do..

Re: Project S14 240sx
It's a helical LSD, no need for figure 8's As far as driving the car on twisties, I've only driven it from Mark's house to home, then to work and back today. I got on it going around a couple tight 90* corners, and the rear end still steps out nicely, and feels more planted than with the welded diff since the helical LSD transfers more torque to the wheel with more grip.
I thought about just finding a whole different rear end, but the only one I knew of at the time that was available was way up in East Bethel at u-pull it, and that would have been out of a '91. I figured it was easier to just cut this one out than go lay in a puddle of mud trying to pull the one up there.

Re: Project S14 240sx
Wasn't there some sort of bad vibrations at speed? There's just so much wrong with welding it like that....haha

Re: Project S14 240sx
Surprisingly enough, it didn't vibrate or make noise or anything at speed. I couldn't believe my eyes when I popped the cover off...

Re: Project S14 240sx
I got big brakes!
All taped up and ready to paint
The bracket bolted on
Old vs. New
old
New
It's a tight fit to the wheel...

Wow, that's a hell of an upgrade! You have a pic of the wheel with the rotor filling it up?
