Needed: lock washers that actually lock

My downpipe keeps coming loose because the bolts aren't man enough to stay put. I switched to allen head style bolts and went with no lock washers, thinking that the ones I had on there might have been causing the bolts to loosen up. Apparently it doesn't matter what I use, they will loosen up anyway.

So, does anyone have any experience with some bolt or washer or combo thereof that hasn't come loose? I know there are the locking nuts like factory mitsu stuff. I could convert to studs and do that, but it's a lot harder to get the pipe on with those and I have VERY little room to work with back there (bad design on my part).

I was gonna suggest this yesterday, but when your car started puking coolant I forgot. Have you thought about using Loctite?

Tried the high temp stuff when I put these in, but I didn't let it sit for even 5 minutes before I drove it, so if that stuff needs to set up, I didn't give it time.

Re: Needed: lock washers that actually lock

If your high-temp nuts and bolts are backing off it could be that they're not torqued properly. Is it possible to get a torque wrench in there to make sure?

Re: Needed: lock washers that actually lock

My frickin turbo bolts keep backing out and falling out. Right now my turbo is being held on by 2 damn bolts. This is getting so annoying. I've tried standard lock washers, but they are not working. I'm going to try some of these nord lock washers.

Anyone know if anywhere local sells these?

Loctite is not effective on things that get really hot. 400f + it "burns off". I've had to do it for stuff at work a few times.

I got mine through Fastenal, had to order them though. You could do that or just use McMaster Carr.

Re: Needed: lock washers that actually lock

I used the nuts that have the washers with the grippy grooves built into them and my downpipe has never came loose -- definitely the way to go

Re: Needed: lock washers that actually lock

What's funny is that right after I posted this, I cranked down my allen-head bolts really hard and they haven't come loose yet. No washer used this time though. We will wait and see though.

If a bolt is coming loose on an exhaust part I would try torquing it when its hot. Or the Nordlock washers look nice, I might have to buy some for my flywheel bolts.
