Setting the thrust bearing usually refers to tapping the end of the crank while the bearings are not tight yet. Tap the crank towards the clutch, then tap it away from the clutch to the proper clearance. You want the biggest clearance towards the clutch, since the crank will be pushed in when the clutch is engaged. It shouldn't be real lopsided though, I do about .001" difference.
