Re: Engine Oil
What would be good for my 2g? I guess I've never really thought about more then those for my car. I don't really race the engine much either, being its my DD.

Re: Engine Oil
What mods do you have on it?
My go-to's are pretty standard:
Mobile1 10w30 stock, lightly modded up to 350-400whp or so, ran this for 4 years in my evo8 did great!
Rotella T6 5w40 same, great oil for the money
AmsOil High Zinc formula 10w40 400-550whp ? I've run this in my evoX for the last 2 years with great success.

Re: Engine Oil
Intake, exhaust, e316g, 660cc injectors, and a front mount. Nothing done to the engine, so then running 10w30 should be fine right?
I've heard running the high mileage full synthetics will be a little better too, because of extra additives? I've never actually ran it though

Re: Engine Oil
No love for the redline motor oil in this thread? With so many running it in their trans, I'm curious why nobody runs it in their motor.

Yea, 10w30 M1 or Rotella T6 5w40 then, nothing fancy.

My Evo IX and X have seen nothing but Mobil 1 motor oils.

Redline motor oil is very good, it's just expensive and tougher to get. I can justify the price and shipping cost for 3 quarts of tranny oil a year much easier than I could 5 quarts 4x/year. I can get Mobil 1 anywhere for less than half the price.

Good to know. Since I'll only be changing it once or twice a year the cost isn't that much more. About $60 with Redline vs $35-40 for M1 or Syntec.

Re: Engine Oil
Thoughts on the best oil to run in the winter for 500WHP stock block FP red powered evo? I run 10w40 high zinc amsoil for the summer. I think I ran 5w30 amsoil last winter, but I don't think it has the same high zinc formula. What has a good level of zinc in a low weight oil? I don't turn down the boost for the winter either. I'm not sure what could go wrong if I just ran the 10w40 all year????

Re: Engine Oil
^Im in the same boat here. 2.3 Build is just about done and MAP told me to go ahead and run that but no short distance drives in the cold weather with the 10w-40

Re: Engine Oil
10W is fine for winter. 5W always seemed too thin for the 4G63 engines, especially once built with looser tolerances than factory.

I run VR1 Full Synthetic 20w-50 in the summer, and I put Amsoil in the tranny.

Re: Engine Oil
Driven Racing Oil by Joe Gibbs Racing. BR5 for break-in, HR4 for Summer, and FR20 for Winter. Non-detergent and high zinc/phosphorus. Forced Performance's article on oil is a good read.

Re: Engine Oil
Just like in gasoline, detergent is a good thing for the vast majority of cars & setups.

Yea true. If I weren't so crazy about how often I change the oil and filter, I probably would run something different.

Re: Engine Oil
GREAT article on engine oil, and break-in oils, if you have the time to read it all!

Re: Engine Oil
Information overload, but good article. Glad to see the very affordable QSUD score high, had plenty of people give me the wtf reaction when I recommend it as an excellent bang for the buck oil. According to this specific test it's actually a substantial bang for the buck. It's become my go-to oil if nothing else is on really good sale. However I wish I would have seen them test the 0w-20/30 version as that's what I typically choose.
Also I may have missed it but would have liked to seen the Motorcraft 5w-20 that is OEM fill for pretty much all fords now.

Re: Engine Oil
Interesting. M1 has a pretty low breakdown temp @ 265. I'm using the Amsoil Dominator which has lower pressure ranking (#38), but good up to 300 degrees. I guess that really only matters if you're doing 20+ minutes at a time on the road course in summer without a good oil cooler. Most cars will never see 265+ oil temps, I think on the vette I saw 270 at the end of my second or third HPDE session on a summer day, pushing the car pretty hard.
I'm thinking the 2.5x price factor for the Amsoil isn't worth it.
