Borg Warner Turbos

Just thought I'd start this up with what I've found on these turbos so far. It's a bit difficult to find info on these compared to all the info out there for Garretts and what not. So if anyone has any good info on these, post it up!

Basically for those of you who don't know anything about these, they use something called Extended Tip Technology on some their compressor wheels (they also offer non-ET compressors as well) to help them flow more air at the same levels as a typical compressor wheel of the same size would flow. They also supposidely try to reduce the rotating mass to help spool. So in the end, the advantage is supposed to be it can flow more air then say a compressor wheel of the same size from Garrett which doesn't utilize ETT. I am not for sure, but I believe Brent Rau runs one of these turbo's, as well as MAP's FD. SLS has also done some testing with these turbos with great results.

I personally am going to be running a used S362 I picked up. These things come in both extended and non-extended tip forms. I wasn't 100% sure when I bought this, if I had gotten an ET or non-ET version, but it was a good deal so I grabbed it anyway. Everyone was beating around the bush when I asked exactly what tip on the compressor was extended, and extended in what way. Every responce I've ever gotten was either a "well i think..." or a "the tips are extended on the compressor wheel, duh". Well that sure doesn't clarify anything. I finally found out that it's the tips on the exducer, are extended out over the center cartridge. There's a good picture of this in a later post.

Also, these turbos typically run 14 (7 tall, 7 short) fins on the compressor wheel instead of 12

Misc pics:

my old s362 which was non-ET

So anywho, I'll be running one of these next year and I guess we'll see how it performs for me. I'll be mating it up more then likely to a bullseye .70a/r T3 v-band exhaust housing, and bolting it up to my SLS T3 manifold.

Here's a few other pics I found that are also interesting:

BW 256 wheel on the left. Standard 50 "trim" with 74.75 exducer on the right.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

So, any idea when this turbo is going on? I have been eyeing up the borg warners too and am also not finding a ton of info. Most of the responses have been good though. I was looking at the S366 or S364. It wouldn't be until next spring, but I always over research everything

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

I don't want to go that big. I am pretty happy with the scm61, but I will probably go a bit bigger when I max that out. I know the exhaust side is WAY too small for my setup. 75 lb/min is about what I would be looking for.

The T67 dbb/t-3 .82/p-trim is what you want.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

The 4088R/4094R is the other turbo I am looking at.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

BBT67 and 4088R are almost the same size, the 4088 is just the newer GT style. The 4088R is a 70lb/min turbo so it isn't much bigger than the SCM61, except the exhaust side will be much better. The T67 is actually 75 lb/min.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

The GT4088 has a 64.5mm(I think) compressor wheel. It's a newer wheel than the commonly used TO4R 67mm wheel, and there has some debate on which wheel is actually better. They seem to capable of similar power. We run non-DBB GT4088s on Kenny's Mustang. They were quite inexpensive back when we bought them, but have gone up in price. The GT4094 also has a 67mm compressor wheel, it's a little bigger than the usual 67mm wheel.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

What do you think is the best turbo around that flow, Shane? I will be making my own piping/manifold, so I can put about anything in. From what I have seen the BBT67 and 4088R are about the same too, with slightly better spool on the 4088R. Info on the S364 is pretty limited from what I can find.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

Well I want to get this turbo on this winter, but the 50trim may go one more season. I've been slowly aquiring my parts. But there are some big things I still need. I need to completely rethink my fuel pump situation, I still need a new Tranny, then I need a clutch that will support the power I'll make. I'm still waiting on my turbo to be sent to BE for them to put a new exhaust housing on it, because they want to verify my exhaust wheel size. So I have a lot of money I need to drop yet, and so this may not happen until next winter. But we'll see. It's been awhile since I found the compressor map, but I thought the 362 put out mid 60 lb/min of flow. That's plenty for my blood. Plus they are supposed to spool pretty well. But ya you are right, it's hard to find info on them.

Alright, I hear where you are coming from Brandon. I was just hoping it would be sooner so I could talk to someone that was running one

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

So I ordered a new S362 up like I said in my project post. But I just wanted to clear up some mis-information that I had receieved, and shared in my first post. The "extended tip" on these turbo's is on the exducer. The tips extend over the backplate like seen in this picture. Not how tall they are, and it has nothing to do with being able to see the smaller blades from the inlet. That other turbo I had ended up being a Non-ET version.

Here's some other comparison pics and misc pics:

A standard non-ET compressor.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

Just some more info I just got. If you've heard that these turbos use some kind of British Pipe Thread or something for the oil fittings, that is only true for the S200's. The S300's use 1/4 NPT.
