How does flywheel surface quality affect clutch engagement?

So, I had run a ACT sprung 6 puck in my car for about 3k, miles, and swapped it out got a street disk because I thought the Ceramic disk was excessively worn (It wasn't, I just forgot how thin it was NEW, and forgot that the ceramic does not wear like organic material does). Anyways, I installed the new disk and went on my way, never bothered to have my flywheel machined. I just pulled my clutch off about 5 minutes, to inspect it while the engine/tranny was out, and the flywheel surface is heavily blued and such, probably high and low spots as well. I bought the ACT XACT brand new, I just measured the step height at .620".

Does this poor surface really affect engangement and holding power? I assume if there is high and low spots, that yes, it would, because there is less surface area for the clutch to use.

Anyone want to elaborate?

Should I even bother getting my flywheel machined with my half used organic disk?

I don't really think you have to worry too much about it, after all, it's only been 3,000 miles like you said. I don't see there being any problem, 3k isn't exactly enough time to start wearing too much on components like a clutch that can see upwards of 50-60k or so. I think you're alright.

Usually you need your shit resurfaced if it's been used for a very long time (like a stock replacement @ 100k or something). Did you do any strip time on it or anything? But even then I'd still say you're ok.

Any hard launches? The hard slipping will heat up the surface of the flywheel and turn it blue like you described.

Re: How does flywheel surface quality affect clutch engagement?

Oops, I'll be more clear. I ran a sprung 6 puck and at the time new XACT flywheel, put 3Kmiles on it, ACT throwout bearing was making noise. I replaced it with a Mitsu one, and put in a street disk. It has been like 15K since then, and yes, the car gets launched hard when its at the track or on the street. So yes it's had enough hard launches. I'm just asking, my flywheel surface is blued all over and colorful from heat, just asking if I should even bother to have it turned.

Turning it probably won't do too much good.

No, blueing is normal for a car that is launched. I wouldn't worry about it. Do check for cracking though, that is obviously an issue if you find any. Chromoly likes to crack.

I had a scattershield on my old dsm. I am 99% sure it is still sitting in the garage. I bought it as it was cheap insurance.
