Drilling into a perfectly good built block is a stupid idea. You are killing a good block, Expirement with a junker block first.

Regarding your anus comment:He had an issue he was trying to fix. His method has been done on other cars, why not a dsm??? We are talking about an engine block, please leave your anus out of this.
Regarding the "perfectly good" block": He had an issue he was trying to fix. I cannot see how his hole would cause the block to fail. I have pulled several motors in my DSM days and I don't care to do it more times than I have to. By using his "good" block, he could try and save the hassle of doing it again. He talked to a engine builder and he said it was ok to drill there. I am sure he was relying on his experienced opinion when he decided to drill the hole. I would trust an assembler.

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
I honestly don't see how a hole where it is in the block would even weaken it.

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
Same here, a small hole to vent wouldn't do that much damage.
I am waiting for a response. If this is his 2.3L I know he just had crank problems and just had it fixed. I think his compression ratio was too high for the timing he was running. His budget to get this fixed was tight already. I don't know if he had to buy a new crank or what.
But after spending all that $$$ and probably owing people just to get the car running and then BOOM all gone. Yeah I would be depressed hating DSM for a while also.
I think there was something else the problem and not the vent system. 2.3L turbo mustangs use that trick
I wonder if he ever changed the spark tables...

Hahahahaha, That honestly just made my day. I'm also pretty sure that no one here said that the hole was going to make his engine fail. Pretty sure the general agreement is that it was retarded...

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
I don't think this idea is retarded especially if it has been done on other cars before. I know some volvo's use something like this for an emissions system. There is a hole on the side of the block that goes to the crankcase similar to this. I'm not gonna be the one to drill a hole in my block though.

It's a popularity contest. You're not sittin' at the cool table so don't go trying new stuff and expect positive feedback.
It's cool that you're trying to be innovative, but at the same time, valve cover mod would've been the most practical thing to do.
Can I have some of what you're smoking too?

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
Sorry about not posting, there is a reason behind the maddness:
Yes, the engine is ruined, thats what happens when your engine SWALLOWS A BOLT, LOL!!
I seriously have no idea how it got in there, cylinder 2 is in sad shape.
Looks like the bolt passed through the engine ok, but the lock washer totally f*cked up the turbine blades of the v-Trim.
The vent that I created worked great, but if I was to do it again, I would put it in a different place.
The ideal place for the hole to be drilled is at the end of the balance shaft housing, facing the transmission. I will be drilling a hole there tonight on my forged engine.
P.S. Even though the engine is ruined, we re-used the shortblock (head ruined/valves bent) on my brother's 96GSX, and the car has driven around the neigbhorhood several times with no problems
(well, clutch engagement issues, but no ENGINE problems, probably a ton of blowby LOL)
ill get carnage pics tonight!

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
I'm quite disappointed with ALL of the negative comments being non-constructive. All forums do have pointless members I guess.
In the end: I spent just under $2k and now I have a great condition, NO rust, 6 bolt swapped 2g eclipse gsx, shifts awesome, and leaks NOTHING. Suck it trebek.

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
Yeah, the negative comments were right though, there wasn't a need to do that to the engine. There was a problem with the engine, fix it and you wouldn't need to add more vents. Live and learn.

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
Well, since my engine ate a bolt (I think it fell into the exhaust port during the swap, must have fallen IN during cranking, and bounced around once it was on)
Now is time for the goodies, time for a rebuild!
Punishment Racing DSM FMIC kit (I dont like the cast aluminum end tanks)
Cyclone intake manifold
Megan Racing springs
2.0 non-turned .20 over
weiscos/eagles
gonna keep AC/ABS

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
With the cast end tanks it less likely to crack and cause boost leaks.

Re: bad idea or terrible idea?
Well, I am running into fittment issues with the FMIC kit
I will post up pics tonight.
The question is: should I use my 14B turbo? it has zero shaft play, and we took it off a 200k+ DSM, so it HAS to be a factory replacement.
Or I can steal my brothers V-Trim
the car is chipped for the 650's and 2G mas and it has a 190.
it has BC 272 cams
would 272's/14b be fun? I cant remember driving a car with a turbo so small, LOL.
this is my DD, keep that in mind.
