Evo wheels vs. FD wheels.

I am seriously considering putting FD wheels on my car and selling my evo wheels.

the fd's are 16x8 and 13lbs, rotational diameter is the same as stock with a 225/50/16

the evo are 17x8 and 20lbs, with 235/45/17 these tires are a bit taller than stock and have a noticable gearing increase.

My reasoning is that lighter is better along with the smaller diameter. The only thing i don't like is that a lot of DSMs run fd wheels and I do like these EVO wheels and I don't really see them that much.

OF course the fd wheels would be getting coated in black.

Thanks for you input
Aaron

Re: Evo wheels vs. FD wheels.

I'm a fan of the FD wheels. Cheap, decent looking, and light.

One thing, if you didn't know already, is that the FD wheels weren't all created equal. There's 2 different "construction" versions. The earlier ones were more prone to break, and the later ones were modified slightly to address that. So maybe do some quick reading and make sure you don't get the ones that break.

Thanks Bman, I found out that the spaces between the studs is the key.
This small thread has pics of the differences.

Re: Evo wheels vs. FD wheels.

I say for straight line traction go with FD rims (more sidewall flex) and if you do a lot of cornering go for the evo8's (smaller/stiffer sidewall). I see evo8's waaayy more then I see FD rims on dsm's.

Re: Evo wheels vs. FD wheels.

^No way, where the hell u see that?

Well I haven't done auto-x or anything. The car usually gets an ass ton of street time with 2-4 drag/track visits during the season.
That being said I'm hoping to get to auto-x soon.

Another thing is that is important is ride quality, the 16s should provide a better ride quality.
I'm hoping people that know or have experience with both handling and wheels and drag racing and wheels will chime in.

4gcrazy I was gonna ask you for a favor.
I could just get some FD wheels and keep 2 sets, lol.

Re: Evo wheels vs. FD wheels.

Old Post but I just wanted to reply because I was thinking of these on my car for a while

First I have been looking for a set for a while and I haven't found a set of FD rims, they must be snatched up by DSM people. if anyone has a idea on where to find them lmk

2nd brakes are a important influence. what size brakes are you going to have? and will they fit into 16" rims

If you are SERIOUSLY going into auto cross, I would say get yourself some FD rims and some hoosiers for auto X. Go with smaller diameter tires. Smaller tire means higher gear ratio once you think about. You are only going to be using 1st and 2nd and might as well have those two gears quick as possible.

This is what I have heard works best
