Re: 1g 2g swap

I am in the same spot. I just got a 91 tsi awd trubo and want to take the engine out and put it into my 95 tsi fwd after it is built up. I just wanted to see some replys also here. I was also seeing if there is anyone that knows if the rolling chassie is worth anything or if anyone is interested. Also if anyone has any links to this process post them as well.

It depends on the condition. Put together 50 quality posts, advertise it in the classifieds, and then find out if anyone is interested.

Nope, It'll never fit. The 2g's are designed for a 2.0 4g63 and the 1g's are designed for a...ah...2.0 4g63...hrm, wait, maybe you're on to something here...
o you
Seriously though, are you talking about motor, trans, etc, or what?

Re: 1g 2g swap

Well, its my buddies car. im pretty sure that the 1g tranny wont bolt up... :/ but i found a site that kind of helps out a little bit. http://www.roadraceengineering.com/1gcasin2g.htm

However im still not sure if anyone has done a 1g rear end w/ axles in a 2g, or if it would be any better, i dont know a whole lot about 2g's in general.

Re: 1g 2g swap

Bolting the motor in is not a problem, if you have a 2G transmission. 3 of the 4 motor mounts are on the tranny on the 2G cars, while 3 of the 4 motor mounts are on the motor in the 1Gs. Running a 2G tranny in a 1G car also isn't too hard, since you just don't use 2 of the 2G tranny mounts. I don't know about going the other way around.

The rear end setups are much different on the 2G versus 1G. There wouldn't be much use to trying to swap a 1G rear end into a 2G. The 2G rear ends and axles aren't too bad as far as breakage. The most common problem with higher HP 2Gs is the 2G rear end actually breaking thier mounting ears and becoming a Woodbridge Parachute.

It would probably be a lot easier to put the right driverain parts into a 2g as the mounts and everything are probably different in a 1g.

Motorcycle cop pulls up next to me on UNI and says "Want to race?"
Me- "I don't think you would stand a chance."
Cop says "probably not" and drives off.

So Shane, how does one with a high HP AWD 2g fix this problem? Fab up some extra mounting arms to keep it stable?

Re: 1g 2g swap

The first thing to try would be solid mounts and then possibly some extra mounts for safety. Marco went to a complete chrome-moly rear subframe in his car after he ejected his pumpkin at the DSM Shootout a couple years ago.
