Stock intake to Short intake, Whats all the sensor crap?

Ok so today I headed out and popped the hood on the 91 eclipse. The idea was to take off the stock air intake and put on an aftermarket one with cone filter. I take the canister off and the filter out and theres all this crap that is inside the filter, I have no clue what it is or does but it eventually goes back to the one plug that goes out of the back of the stock air filter housing. Obvously, if I switched to the intake I was going to use, all that crap would go bye bye. so, questions, first, what is all that electronic stuff insifde the filter for? and second, how can i put on an aftermarket intake? is all that needed? or can it just be taken out? Id assume if Mitsu put it there it serves some purpose.

The stuff in the air filter is the MAS. It measures the airflow into the motor, so it is very important. Is the intake that you are trying to put on for a different kind of car or something?

Well its just a cone filter and pipe I had lying around from an old project. I see all these intakes where they are all different and dont have that MAS piece in there, its just a pipe, and it goes to the cone filter. its like they totally removed the stock air intake. So whats the best way to do this? aftermerket pipe to the intakes MAS and then latch a K&N on to the end and take the casing around the filter off?

Those intakes on Hondas and such look like that because they use a different method of measuring air. You absolutely need the MAS, so you either need to figure out how to attach it to your new intake or stick with your stock one.

Re: Stock intake to Short intake, Whats all the sensor crap?

You could get the K&N replacement filter and put it in there. Then just get rid of the big rubber hose that goes to the throttlebody and replace it with hard pipe. I don't think you could make a "true" cold air intake because I'm sure you don't want to put the MAS (mass airflow sensor) behind the bumper. Otherwise it could get damaged.

The K&N direct replacement filter will actually help a little, but the hard pipe from the MAS to the throttlebody would be what really makes the difference.

Look around the net and see if you can find a cold air intake from a non-turbo dsm and pattern it after that. Just make sure that you keep the MAS so you don't screw up the engine.

Have the parts store look it up. It should just be the stock replacement.
