Questions About Engine Rebuild

Well im getting my Tranny rebuilt over the winter and after next summer i want to rebuild the engine just because it has so many miles (160,000) There are kits on Ebay that come with all the gaskets, pistons, rings, bearings etc. My question is how hard would that be to do myself (with friends and dad) my friend rebuild his supra engine and seemed to have no problem so i think ill be able to get through it. Anyone have anything to comment on?

If you do it yourself, at least buy quality rebuild components from Mitsu.

I know the whole you get what you pay for but there are some kits that look pretty legit and arent super cheap like others, anyone on here done one themsleves and what did you use? Oh and back on topic how hard is it, i have some knowledge but never been completely inside an engine but i would have help

I hope you know quite a bit, because mistakes cost a lot of money. If you rebuild it wrong, you could easily lose your new parts, the expensive machining cost and your original block and head. There's a lot of tricks that experience teaches you, and there's one or two that are specific to the DSM engines.

I agree with Steve, if you are doing it yourself to save money, you are probably not going to. Chances are your first rebuild will not be that good. Check with LSE or MAP for a rebuild.

Those ebay kits are garbage. If your going to rebuild don't just jump into it, take the time to research how to do things. Read read READ!!! threads on rebuilds and ask knowledgeable people questions. And some advice: if it aint broke don't fix it!

I would do a comp/leak down test and see where the motor is at. For the most part it is the valve seats and seals that start to go bad in the head. So a simple valve job with new seals would take care of that. And Topline anything sucks and should not be used, ever.

I agree with John as a compression/leakdown test will let you know what, if anything, should be repaired or replaced. If you do decide to rebuild it I would also recommend Mitsu components. The cost difference is negligible when it comes to longetivity and reliability. As Steve and Jet said, there are several tips and tricks that are engine specific. If I'm not mistaken several people in the area that have tried it themselves and learned the hard way.

if you do plan to rebuild your motor for any reason, go along with mitsu full gasket kit. you have all the gaskets that you WILL NEED to replace. you'll thank yourself later.

i wish they will throw in a couple extra crush washer though...for the heck of it.
and throttle body gaskets...and injector o-rings, insulators...list goes on.

I am doing my first rebuild now and i am have good success. i had all my machining done a wagamons. And i bought a service manual for gsx eclipses and a cd for my computer and it tells you basically step by step on how to dissasemble your motor and how to put it back together. But i would not go with ebay and get a rebuild kit. just take some time and do a little research and you will find out on the differences for parts and prices.
