Half shaft Driver's side Bolts...

Ok... so today I woke up, got excited and decided at 11am to goto Rock Falls. I put a different boost controller on the car and magically it holds 26 psi to redline!!!! Before it fell to 22 psi . But shit, I was excited. I went to go do a pull.... the alternator tensioner broke. So i temporarily fixed that with a bolt through the bracket. Sooo.... I was like shit, its all good. I go buy $30 in race gas getting ready to goto Rock Falls. On the hwy almost to 94 by my house, the car starts clanking.... SOoooooo... I go home. Check it out and the bolts that hold the half shaft BOTH broke into the block.. ANY SUGGESTIONS on if you've fixed this before WITHOUT pulling the engine? Any way to tap these out and make sure they are tapped out? HELP please I want to redyno and go out and run some people again now that it holds boost.

Re: Half shaft Driver's side Bolts...

If you can fit a drill back there and line it up perfectly there's no reason you couldn't get them out without taking the engine out. Maybe even unbolting the engine and dropping it a couple inches would do the trick.

If you still need help by next weekend I'm for it. I have a right angle drill so you can fit in tight spaces. If I get a day off of work I might be able to run up during the week too... LMK

Re: Half shaft Driver's side Bolts...

Oh that is not a fun problem. Im not sure what you can do as far as not pulling the engine. I doubt a drill will fit up there and then you have to tap it all out, which I think would be very difficult with the engine inplace. You could fab up a different bracket bolting to somewhere else but that would be pretty custom.

OR disconnect IC connections and lower the exhaust and the engine enough to maybe get a drill in there at a good angle.

That is one hell of a problem to try and fix with the engine in place. Not sure which route to go....

I might be up for that offer because I don't know when I'm gonna get this issue resolved.

Re: Half shaft Driver's side Bolts...

I would try to get the bolts out first with some heat, wd40 and some easy out / screw extractors.

Not only did those happen. Now the Crank pulley fell apart tonight also. God I am in love with this car.

Re: Half shaft Driver's side Bolts...

I talked to Shane a bit about this. The guy that had it before you probably didn't put a big enough spacer in when he got rid of the A/C. He bottomed the bolt out in the block and it was never holding the axle.

So, the bolt is probably bottomed in the hole. Not good. It is going to be pretty tight. Get a nail set, sharpen the point and try and spin the bolt out using it as a chisel with a hammer. That causes the least damage. The last resort should be drilling it out.
