Well some have had a stock tranny hold together for a while with 500 some HP, while other like me, haven't had quite the same luck. Hell, I couldn't seem to keep a tranny in my 1G making 250HP/250TQ @ DB. It really all depends on your driving style IMO.

Re: stock tranny question

I don't think there is an exact number you can put on a stock tranny and give it a safety stamp of approval.

The age and condition of the tranny are going to be more of a factor than anything else. If you've been slamming gears, your shift forks may be the weak point. The stock center diff is also a weak point if a lot of power has been pushed through it for a long period of time. Gear condition (teeth ready to sheer off).

I personally feel that stock trannies, in GOOD condition, that aren't constantly abused with launches and what-not, are actually fairly strong. The weak point in a stock tranny in good condition, would be your center diff. That is why I chose to go with a stock rebuild, with a 4-Spider diff for my setup. Evo gear sets may handle more, but most of us don't make the kind of power needed for that. At the levels I was making, I never had an issue with gear strength, just stupid synchro's wearing out.

I'm unsure of you power goals, but I would say if you are running sub 400hp levels, a stock tranny in good shape would probably do you fine. Above that, I'd consider getting a 4-spider put in there. If you start reaching 700+ power levels, then you might want to look into stronger gears.

One other tid-bit. The GVR4 first used to be a pretty popular "upgrade" as it was a taller gear. While it may be taller, I've read in quite a few places that the gear itself is actually weaker than the stock DSM 1st gear, and will become the weak point of your tranny. So keep that in mind if you ever are considering the GVR4 1st gear "upgrade".

I was told by Jon from TRE when I bought my transmission that the GVR-4 1st was thinner in width, which is why it is considered weaker.

Re: stock tranny question

I'd say just get a stock rebuild with a 4 spider, and you'll be plenty set.

Re: stock tranny question

What he said. Stock tranny longevity depends if you are retarded or not, how goodhart had trouble with his at only 250/250 is pretty amazing.

I broke my center diff after about 10k of idiotic type launches but I can say at least 50 were on that one, after that I realized if I didn't want to break them I should be nicer.

There are plenty of people with some 135+ cars on stock trans, don't be an idiot with it and it will be good to you.

4 spiders are awesome, if you don't mind and are on a budget you can do a welded diff, i only say that because of the awesome ebay clutch you linked too.

These cars can go pretty quick on teh cheap, but don't be stupid.

Pretty amazing to me too, since the first one was bad when I got the car, the second I launched about 10 times total in 6 months on a stock rebuild, and it exploded while shifting nicely at 3k rpm. After that I was ripped off on one trans, and another came with a bad first gear.

Re: stock tranny question

Don't weld the diff, and If you decide too, make sure whoever does it, has done them before, and be prepared to break stuff. I've broke front pinion shaft, and tore the drive gear right off my old AWD trans that had a welded center diff. probably saw 10-15 launches. The trans I have in now with a stock diff has probably 20+ launches on it already and hasn't broken yet. The tires get some sort of funny hop I with a welded diff, and I think that can help stuff break.

Re: stock tranny question

Ill tell you I paid 2600 for a stock rebuild through aamco transmissions and I feel like a complete idiot for doing so when I could have had a stage 4 for the same price.... this is when I was a newb and had my car for only 2 months and this was 4 years ago before I start getting bashed for my stupidity.. I recommend you send it to shep for a stock rebuild at 900 if your going that route.

Re: stock tranny question

Using the correct oil goes a long way also. I personally Like the Mitsu Cocktail MTL/MT-90. I've used Royal Purple before and that was ok. Just don't dump in some Amsoil GL-5 fluid in there. It has to be GL-4 rated too, and GL-4 isn't an old rating that is replaced by GL-5.
