scm61 reliability

So before you all kill me and my roommates too,
i am scared of the 61 because i do not wish to lose the reliability of the car, the street manner have been ok so far, but i have had issues with the car/turbo holding boost.
Worked on all that and hopefully i will have no more problem with that.
I have to put the turbo on today, so i will see if the issues are gone.

Re: scm61 reliability

I only see reliability going down as you make more and more power... The turbo should hold up fine long term as long as its taken care of.

The more power you make the more stuff you break.

Not necessarily true. The more you beat on it, the more anything will break, close to stock, or heavily modded, doesn't matter. I can say the highest hp DSM I've owned was the most "reliable" because things were put together and held together fine.

QFT.

Build it right, don't abuse it, and it should last a reasonable amount of time.

Look at the raw abuse my motor took last season aaron. Yeah I was breaking shit, but all things considered, with that amount of power, it did very well!

I thought you had to yank that thing like 10 times?

On topic though, in general you do hear about people rebuilding these PTE turbos more often than say a 16g or 20G, but there are probably more cases where people are seeing similar life out of 50 and 61's. JET is a good example of this.

Build your car well, and keep up on maintence and you should be fine. And QFT = "qouted for truth" or here is a few other good possible QFTs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QFT

Re: scm61 reliability

My car has been abnormally reliable for two years now(daily driving).

2.4, gt3561, and absolutely everything to accompany it.

Put it together right, it will last if you don't abuse it. There is a difference between using it what it was made for, and abusing it.

Re: scm61 reliability

I know DSM's can be made reliable, however is the scm61 reliable? It is almost two different things.
And how is jet a good example of this (thinking of buying his setup)

JET had a 50-trim forever and he's had a SCM61 for several years now with no issues.

Re: scm61 reliability

I got my 61 rebuilt after the first year. and have been on it for 3 yearsw now with no problems. The only thing that broken on my car due to power was my transmision. all the other problems were things that were 1/2 assed to begin with. My car was very relable this summer I drove it to work almost everyday.

Re: scm61 reliability

Bottom line. "Reliability" has NOTHING to do with a turbo size. It has to do with who put it together. Some cars don't even run everyday and they're stock with a MBC and a exhaust.

QFT = quoted for truth
WYSIWYG = what you see is what you get

Like its been said, if you dont beat on it, you shouldnt be breaking anything. I have heard, however, that the thrust bearings on PTE turbos dont take abuse overly well. If you are just going to be taking it to the track every so often and drive nice during the week I dont think it will be too much of a problem. Just in case if you have the money you could get a BB turbo, thats what a couple of my buddies that are hard on shit do.

Re: scm61 reliability

Yep, both of my PTE turbo's have been great. I put a lot of miles on my 50 trim and I knew of 3 other people it went to after I had it, CVD was the first one. My SCM61 has been pushed quite hard and is still like new. No shaft play or anything. I think the oil has a lot to do with it and everything getting warmed up before you beat on it, cool down is also nice. I wouldn't be worried about your SCM61 at all, I do have the oil feed line coming from the filter housing, but most people do.

Just for reference, my sc61 is fed oil from the stock head location. The turbo has been through a lot of use/abuse and is rock solid.
