Crankcase evac/breather setup discussion
It got mentioned in another thread that I didn't want to jack any longer and I was thinking of posting one anyway.
SO ON WITH IT!!!!!!!
I need to improve my current crankcase evac system in my car, and from what I could find online you need to run a real catch can, something that can seperate oil and air not just a bottle that collects the crap.
options:
Calan Catch can: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/cust...on-system.html $80, can me made custom size.
This would be the setup I would copy, but I don't like the placement of the fittings or the fact I'd have more lines all over my engine bay.
Another option presented by Goodhart (I think some other users told me about it too) is the Grimmspeed AOS (air oil seperator) $250-300 cap alone.

I looked very little into this setup, but it looks like this was made specifically for subies but its an oil cap and could be used on other cars, the issue I have would be the lines that would have to be run to it and then filling oil would be a pita with having to remove lines. Also the fact that whatever you collect in the cap would have to be disposed of somehow and that little cap doesn't look like it would hold a lot, plus once it filled up wouldn't that hurt its effectiveness?
I don't know.
I do know the calan catch can works great as a catch can, holds enough to be NHRA legal, filters so good that not a single bit of residue was found on his intake or my own. I had one on my old car and it worked fantastic and I have a small one on this car now that is working well, but i need bigger lines.
With that said, what are you experiences with this?

The GS one doesn't hold it in the cap, it recirculates it right into your valve cover. It's routed like this:
One end to VC, one to intake. There are some versions with 3 nipples also. I just liked the fact that it saved space in the engine bay and there was no can to empty.
Looks like the price has been raised to $130 for those other ones also? Idk, you could always email/call Grimmspeed and see if you can be a DSM tester for them. I know a few DSM's around here with them. If you don't like how that works, you could always go with the other one, since it has worked for you in the past.

^Yeah I emailed them so we will see, my car would be a good test bed I think.
I'm looking at engine bay pics now to get an idea for routing the lines, but looks like there aren't too many ways about it.

Thats my old evo. It seemed like a nice setup, but I don't think my evo ever made enough power to really test it. No real good way to hide the lines, I eventually zip tied the lines together and that gave it a bit more of a "cleaned up" look to it.
On my black car I had 2 -10 lines in the stock breather spots going to a vented jmf catch can. The valve cover also didn't have baffels so it wasn't the most daily friendly setup as you had to drain it a lot. You could always do like some people do, put a fitting into the hole on the block to check to see if you balance shaft is set correctly. I've read of Honda's doing this but don't think I've ever really seen a dsm do it. I'd save you from having to drain it ever. I think the -10 lines look cool in the engine bays if you have a cool catch can too.
Old setup in the black car. If I ever start to make more power I will go this route again I think and try and re-attach the baffle. This setup cured shooting my dipstick sky high.
I'll be interested to see what you end up with.

^I'm looking at diff. setups like that, a guy on link makes baffles that you can put back on now for $50 or something. I'm thinking a setup like what you had there pretty much. I just don't want the lines everywhere.

Yea I saw those baffles on link earlier today, I was tempted to buy one then decided I have no need for it any time soon.

Thx, i'm trying to keep some tech on the site and hopefully the people that have something worthwhile to contribute continue to do so.
I'm trying to figure out the perfect situation here, because ideally you would want the engine to be under vacuum at all times, so I could use 2 seperate catch cans.
One between the PCV and intake manifold and another with an increased line size between the breather fitting on the VC and intake pipe.
I've come up with some ideas for fittings, i just wish I knew how to weld.

Well Grimmspeed emailed me back and said "all of their test units are distributed" so F that idea, looks like I'm sticking to what I know.
I'm gonna contact the maker of the catch cans and see what he can come up with for me.

I made my own catch can, wasn't too pretty but it got the job done and didn't have oil in my intake pipe. I took both VC breathers into the sides of a PVC pipe, and then the top was routed into intake so it would always pull vacuum, even under boost. The intake manifold line won't do anything under boost so it really doesn't help when needed most.
A metal catch can with -10 AN fittings would be great, just like Brad posted above from his 2g. But I would route that top breather into the intake so it's actively pulling air out instead of just venting to atmosphere.

My personal favorite design for a DSM with a stock ECU is still a sealed dual catch can setup. You put one between the PCV and intake manifold. And a second one between the VC and the Intake. Exact setup I ran, except mine was a single catch can that had two separate chambers inside. That way there is at least some sort of vacuum helping draw air out at all times.

They make Vacuum pumps for this. A friend of mine is going to be trying it on his MR2, don't need to screw with the intake then.
