has anyone ever heard of cutting the tops of the pistons off to make them lighter? this chicka that i talk to says that her bf is going to do that because he heard that it will make his pistons lighter and his car in turn faster..... i myself have never heard of such a thing besides grinding for head clearance.....

any help appreciated.... oh yeah and it's a mazda mx-6 if that helps....

Girls who don't know anything about cars take anything said to them as fact. Pistons are shaped the way they are for a reason, and removing material from anywhere, especially the crown, is a bad thing.

Tell her that her boyfriend is a dumbass and should stop watching Fast and the Furious... Be prepared for the beating she'll give you.

Well that's good to hear... It frustrates me when girls come spouting crap (especially about cars) that their boyfriend told them, and they believe it's the truth. At least this one knows what a piston is, I guess.

He'll be losing some compression for sure, unless I read what you posted wrong.

Making blanket statements that cutting any material off the crown is a bad thing is not a great idea. There are sometimes reasons to remove material from the crown that are legit, not common and very much application specific but legit none the less.

Sure, you can lighten the pistons by drilling large holes through them. The more you drill, the lighter the piston. And the real secret is to drill holes through the piston from side to side. It helps promote more even oiling of the skirts.
