How much can origional trans take

So I have a 90 Eclipse AWD
Transmission rebuilt 20,000 mi ago

I was just wondering and was searching around trying to find how much horse can the trans take. I have heard that they are not the most reliable transmission after some hp but I was wondering is there a rule or a guideline on how much hp a trans could take.

I am guessing that the first thing ofcourse would be to upgrade the clutch and put some red line in the transmission itself.

Also I am wondering is there anything different with the 90s transmission that I should know about. It seems like it is an off year for the transmission. Or did I hear of something completely wrong?

Re: How much can origional trans take

For a 90, the part on the tranny where the linkage connects is different along with it having a different t-case spline than the other years. If you were to sell it to someone with a different year 1g, they would need the t-case from you or need to swap the output shaft and use their own bracket where the shift linkage connects to. I haven't ever seen a hp on where trannys break. I am sure how you drive it has a big deal to do with it though.

90 blockers/ synchronizers suck, Misu put clutch material on them to help engagement, but stopped in 1991.

the synchros blow, yes.

but you won't be shredding gears or anything until after the 500+wtq point.

you might also luck out and break some shift rails!!

Or just keep a stocker as backup because depending on how you beat on it, it could break at any second.

Re: How much can origional trans take

Well I don't like to think of me beating on it

However If my goal was say 300 hp on the car would the trans be able to take it (with a upgraded clutch ofcourse)

Another question from my cheap skate mind:

I know shep rebuilds transmissions but does anyone on this forum rebuilt his own with upgraded parts?
I would like to think if I get the parts my self and did a lot of the transmission work that I could rebuild one just as good as shep (well maybe).
just a thought

You won't rebuild it as good as Shep. The tranny won't need any work done unless you want better shift forks, which is solely how hard you slam it into gear, not a HP related item. Stock trannies have seen over 500whp without a problem.

Re: How much can origional trans take

On the flip side of that coin, stock trannies have seen nothing more than STOCK hp and blown to smithereens. A lot of it has to do with how you drive the car, how the person before you drove the car, what year vehicle you have, how many miles, how many hard miles etc.

I wouldn't expect much out of a stock tranny. Sure people have made big hp and *used* a stock tranny, but after time they'll all fail.

Instead of endless speculation from all the experts here, just drive the thing til the tranny pukes.

Re: How much can origional trans take

So with my transmission with a rebuild 20,000mi ago we can assume that it is still kind of fresh. This is a 90s tranny, not as strong as a 91-94 however It should take about 300hp right?

So rules

No hard shifting into gear
no clutchless shifting
Anything else I am forgetting?

Cheap build up of trans

Red line trans fluid would help
Cluch i am guessing needs to be replaced like i stated before
I am guessing those metal shifter bushings would help not to grind the gears. Not that they are grinding now but it is a little choppy

Well time to puke a tranny!!!

I will write a book on how much a DSM will take before it blows up and make more on the book then the dsm is worth

on the otherhand probably most of the people on this forum are probably experts on the subject
