Re: team ab drag race and street builds

never considered ron before to be honest. may be worth a call. Yes we did the powder coating ourselves. tools for trans rebuild? I would absolutely consider doing my own rebuild if I had more knowledge of it or at least more write ups or vids to do the research.

The trans is pretty easy as long as you have a press and a nice "seperator plate" thing. Also, you'll need a few specialty tools like a 36mm socket. I believe the interwebs has a detailed trans guide somewhere.

Rick Shindley from Big Lake can rebuild your DSM tranny. Oh, wait this isn't 2004.

If you're considering rebuilding your trans, here are the resources I found useful.

Service Manual: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/freq...e-manuals.html

TMZ preload specs: http://www.galantvr4.org/ubbthreads/...25&Main=862594

Jack's bronze synchro rings: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pages/mits-parts

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

^ yup old news to me, but thanks. I'm saying until I know I could trust myself i'm not chancing my first rebuild on a car with as much power as i'll be throwing at it. I'd rather spend the money to have a pro do this for now and be money ahead. If a reputable person was willing to let me sit in on a session hell yeah i'd be into that for sure. I have 3 motors to build and install into cars not to mention tuning etc. I just don't think I have enough information for the way my brain works to have serious thoughts of doing it myself yet. I do appreciate the comments and effort from all so far.

If you can spec out and assemble a motor you'll find the trans is cake. Just crack one open and disassemble it you will find it's very simple.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

I've always been under the impression the trans is much more difficult to master or more people would be doing it. That's why I assumed most people with wild builds use a reputable trans shop

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

I always thought it was a big deal because it requires a press. I bought the one in the pic for around $170 with coupon at Harbor Freight. It worked great.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Edit no worries here we will see how funding goes. Project list is long at this point. Trans, clutch, injectors, boston hatcher, wheels tires, maybe turbo upgrade. Kiggly crank sensor, 3 inch intercooler piping for cold side, q45 tb, timing belt, etc etc

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

^ gonna be sick high lift, high compression, and boost.

Didn't really take any pics, but it was a crazy weekend for me. I specked out andre and jessie's short blocks out, ended up being three blocks in total. Jessie needs and 6 bolt crank, and a rod. andre needs a seven bolt crank, and a rod. The other 6 bolt is good to go for a refresh and kingly main girdle. Also if anyone has info on how to shave the rods to create more side clearance on the crank I wouldn't mind hearing opinions

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

ok i have my trans torn down. I can tell the gear on the fort shaft that connects to the forward gear is toasted as parts or the gear are missing, so that is $185 from jacks. What I don't know is how to inspect the syncros, hubs, forks.. The rest of the gears are all pretty good looking. I was grinding 2nd and 3rd like it was religion on sunday so I know there is a problem

Synchros should have a sharp point on them. If they are rounded over then you should change them.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Replace all synchros while in there, they are cheap. Double synchros are a little more I think $67. Also inspect both hub/sliders for wear but I would just replace them too.
