Thinking about welding my diff. I have a couple questions.

I just picked up a used trans for my car. While I have it out I want to weld the diff. I've never taken a tranny apart before, so I'm curious to if it's pretty easy to do? I searched on a couple sites and came up with nothing. Anyone have some pics of how they welded there diff?

I've wanted to do this too. The reason I havent is because I've heard (from good sources) That if you break an an axil the car wil become uncontrolable and go into the wall. I've been running a LSD insert I have probly 10 passes on it with no problems. It cut a few 10ths off of my 60ft times. When I installed the insert I welded the dif pin to the houing and welded the pin that holds the dil pin in place. Some day when I have money I'll get a real diff.

I'd recommend a phantom grip, if they still make them. A welded diff is going to be pretty harsh on the street. I still remember a certain flat black FWD back in the day that had to back up a few times to make the harsh 90 degree turn into the lanes at RF. Plus his axles would pop out as well, although that might have just been the big old slicks he had on there.

Re: Thinking about welding my diff. I have a couple questions.

I know the downsides to welding the diff. This car see's maybe 3000 miles a year max. I am wondering about actually taking the transmission apart and welding it. I googled and saw a few pics and I've seen a couple in person. Is it just fairly simple removing it from the trans or is it a little more involved?

There are many other things I would do first. Once traction becomes a real issue, then look into dealing with it. But just to do it for the sake of doing it, I wouldn't.

Its not much of a street car. I take it out on the weekends and to track meets. I guess I'm not getting my questions answered so you can just close the thread. I'll have to dig into myself.

Re: Thinking about welding my diff. I have a couple questions.

usually when people weld up the diff's they weld the spiders that drive the axles to the housing of the diff. Be prepared to break stuff with a welded diff.
