Honestly, my goal was to have the trans out and flywheel getting machined by friday. I'm super happy with the progress!

Re: beaterX project thread

ACT 6 puck ftw! I love mine...from what I remember.

I am not sure if the diff pins are in my tranny yet or not, but you could call Danny at DB and ask how much they were to install, i am not even sure yet.

SSP also just released their new MC since their old ones were having problems. The new one is a single piece and doesn't use stock components any more like the old one did. I never had problems, but didn't have much use on mine.

So just some things to think about...personally I would do the MC for sure and if you plan to beat on the car more, then I would just do the diff pins while the trans is out.

But your own labor is free, so maybe it's not such a big deal to do it yet.

Wrench on a holiday weekend? Bah! I plan on drinking and relaxing with family

I think I'm going to skip the master cylinder for now and just plan on replacing it down the road. If it explodes on me, well I guess I didn't replace it soon enough I'm on a tight-ass budget for this, not only monetarily, but also time-wise. I have interviews, work, and family/friend stuff to do nonstop this summer, I just want the car done and put it behind me.

I'm investigating the diff pin thing today. I don't plan on pulling this thing apart for a long time, so I'm considering it.

With all the problems that people had with that SSP master cylinder, I'm glad that I'm still on the stocker. It obviously hasn't burst yet. At this point in time, a IX conversion seems safer if you're going to do anything.

Did you do that AMS ring or anything? or just rocking 100% stock MC? I like the idea of an IX conversion, that is on my list of things to research.

The rings don't work, so I'm stock. It's the Exedys that always break the MC. The ACT HD plates are more hit-n-miss. The IX conversion involves notching the firewall but otherwise doesn't look too bad.

Re: beaterX project thread

Nice work scheides... I am loving the homemade transmission jack. That is great!

The ugraded IX MC looks like a great idea "if" the stocker fails. As for the diff pins, I heard great results with welding them in place or don't even break the tranny seal.

The SSP works fine and they are shipping me one this week. The problem with the last one was they didn't replace the spring from the stock MC and reused it in their upgraded one and it wore out. So the new one is a full unit that is supposed to be perfect, i guess we will find out, ill be rocking it.

Anyone else look into Ralliart's metal clutch master cylinder offering?

All the information I have seen shows that it will not fit the USDM one.

There is a thread on EvoXforums about it and AMI customs (who partners with SSP for their MC) insists that there is no way it would fit.

I wouldn't risk it unless I was absolutely sure it worked, but the part itself would be nice.

EDIT: I believe that the Ralliart piece was the same piece as the Evo 8/9 MC actually.

Those are my "special" transmission removal tools I use on every Mitsu clutch job I have done. It sure beats having many jacks underneath the car and you can lift on the wood and move the motor or tranny around.

It really helps when I do evo clutches by myself, it's like another set of hands.

All the credit should go to my brother though, back when he worked at Kennedy transmission that would be all they would use on every car. Build an "H" frame out of wood and suspend shit from it, no need to bolt it together.

Scheides, wish you had the clutch so we could get it done tonight!

Also, after working on Chris's car last night, it isn't nearly as rusty or in rough shape as I once thought from the earlier pictures. Everything came apart nicely and nothing looked rough and in bad shape. Car was just dirty dirty when he bought it.

Re: beaterX project thread

Shane just helped me make up my mind on the diff pins. $350-400 for install and turnaround is a day, meaning 1-3 days including coordinating me dropping off and such. Then, they don't have the pins, I'd have to get them from buschur for $190+ shipping + the 3-5 days it'd take, meaning another week before I can even think about my trans being ready. I detest downtime. Trans is going in as soon as the clutch comes in, thursday or friday as-is, with some redline fluid and a machined stock flywheel.

Luck is on my side, sorta. Met up with Jim this morning and he brought my flywheel down to Brake Warehouse to get turned, and Trevor is going to pick it up for me in the morning. If it works out, I'd like to get the trans and xfer case bolted up before the weekend, then just button it up myself when time allows. Should be back on the road early next week at the latest.
