Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

I think with the amount of money I have wrapped up in this engine I'm just a little overly paranoid and want to make sure everything goes good

Completely understandable! I actually like your idea of Amsoil break-in oil for the first 50, then conventional, then synthetic.

Seems like a good idea to me too. Plus I really can't justify driving out to Cottage Grove to return it so might as well use it lol

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

I agree with Steve, change that first oil out quickly. I think I went around 20 miles on mine too, then 100, then 500. At the 500 change I switched to synthetic. Just vary the RPM quite a bit and fully lift off the throttle at 3-4k so you pull a good vacuum.

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

I prefer when possible to seat rings on the dyno and immediately move to tuning.

Street cars= Idle/startup/check over, change oil.
Vac pulls (20 or so miles) Change oil

Begin tuning non high load stuff for a few hundred miles, change oil at 500 miles. Depending upon rough in mileage period, start tuning high load around 100-200miles.

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

Having it broken in on the dyno was another thing I have been thinking about because I have changed a few things from last year and it was never fully tuned last year and I definitely don't feel comfortable messing around with afrs or timing with aem. It just seems most people don't recommend breaking it in on the dyno.

Weather its on the dyno or on the street I just want to make sure it's done right

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

The car is tuned for wide open throttle so no reason to worry about any issues with the tune.

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

The car is not tuned for wide open throttle right now. That's part of the problem

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

Hey 4seasons, I'm in the same boat with my Evo 8. I got the engine rebuilt and installed by MAP. The "Oil Changes and Intervals" sheet we got is misleading. It is prepared for conventional oil break-in, with change intervals at 50, 500, and 1500. The problem is MAP uses Amsoil Break-In oil for their new engines and what was discussed with me was there's an initial break-in and tune for about 25 miles, an oil change with new Amsoil Break-In oil, and then run it to around 1500 miles, at which point it is recommended by Amsoil to switch to Dominator synthetic oil.

I've read somewhere that Amsoil recommends using Break-In oil for a maximum of 1000 miles. With that, I'm going to run my current Break-In oil (in at 25 miles) up to the 1000 mile mark and then switch to Dominator. I'll get it retuned at that point too.

Then.... I'm going to fuck shit up

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

Right now my plan is to run the amsoil break in for 20-30 miles, change the oil and filter run amsoil break in again up to 100 miles, change the oil and switch to conventional, then switch to synthetic at 1500 miles. I'll probably bring it to Shane for a tune around the 500 mile mark

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

I should back up and ask where you're at in the process. Did MAP A)rebuild your engine and you installed it, B)they rebuilt and installed it, or C)they rebuilt, installed, and street tuned it?

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

MAP has a dyno, I doubt they street tune anything. They may check or verify a dyno-tune on the street, but that's probably it. No legit shop would risk street tuning a car; fast way to get shut down and assets seized/awarded.

Dyno isn't up and running yet. They had some issues with the builders but moving forward on it recently I believe.

Shit, they're in the middle of nowhere now. You could hide all sorts of bodies over there. Street racing anyone? LOL

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

idk, they were looking for a tuner last I checked. Not sure getting it tuned there is even an option right now.

Wat?
Last I heard they still have Jordan, unless he just quit or maybe they're looking for another.

Regarding your "Wat?", just imagine the lawsuit if they were to crash a car while street-tuning. From the car's owner, driver of the car they hit, any passengers they hit, owners of other damaged property, etc. Basically, a good lawyer would put them out of business since I guarantee no business insurance policy covers illegal street tuning, and no tuning waiver will hold up in court if it was performed illegally.

Jordan's still there. He helped me when I picked up my car. He's not going anywhere. He hangs out there on weekends for other stuff too

Re: How many miles before getting a tune?

Eh crap, 4 Seasons went offline. If MAP built your car and then tuned it, they *should have* changed the oil after the initial break-in and tuning. I would run the included Amsoil Break-In oil 500 miles if you're going to change it and get a tune then.
