stretched shifter cables

so i got my engine mounts in today. the front crossmember was wobling back and forth, along with the engine side of the mount being compleatly loose. turns out after putting them in the motor is tilted about a half an inch backwards as the grommet did not match the pin in the shifter.

i tried to get it adjusted right but ran out of room. after i pulled the threaded coupler off this is what i found.

im guessing its some stretched cables. the shifter is centered side to side as far as i can tell and it doesnt seem to have any unruly slop.

Re: stretched shifter cables

yea im trying to figure out why this is way off. i was thinking because the engine was leaning forward due to the weak front crossmember that it mught have pulled and eventualy streched the cables.

any way to verify cables and brackets?

Re: stretched shifter cables

Stupid question, but are you sure the tranny is not in gear? If the shifter is sitting at neutral and the tranny is in gear, they are not going to line up.

Re: stretched shifter cables

no the tranny is not in gear. the shifter cable in question is controlled by left and right motion so being in gear wouldnt matter.

Re: stretched shifter cables

Might want to think again how the shifter cables work if you think being in gear won't move that one. If that is the case, then why is it there?

I have never had my cables stretch or heard of it being a common problem. The routing of the cables will obviously change their length, make sure it is routed correctly. Also the bracket on top of the tranny can be mounted backwards, but I think it would throw both of them off. The metal part of the bracket should be towards the firewall and angles forward, the front side is open.

Re: stretched shifter cables

i understand what both cables do. i was just trying to get the point across that i would not be able to move that cable back and forth if the car was in gear. just worded it very poorly.

both cables did move back about a 1/2 inch after installing the front motor mount.

checked a few sites about the brackets and what not. seems everything is in order on that front. though i might try a 90 style shifter bracket shim or whatever that little 4 bolt plate is called.

Re: stretched shifter cables

That doesn't look like the original shifter assembly. Way too rusty to have been the one that was in that car when I sold it. Wonder if someone swapped in a different year shifter assembly?

Re: stretched shifter cables

If you are available week days I might be able to swing by there sometime and take a look at it. I am pretty close to you.
