2g transmissions

ok i plan on picking up a 2g talon with no engine or trans my ? is could i just get a fwd trans and put the transfer case up to it ? are the fwd trans and awd trans the same as the fwd ... really like to know i have been working on 1g for awhile and now im getting a 2g so im trying to get idea what im getting into

all i know is u can not use a 1g trans in a 2g thats all i have found so far to answer my ? but its funny cause they look simular but differnt mount points

just looking for an eazy way to get this 2g running and on the road ...

the cheapest awd 2g trans is $700 and i dont want to pay that for one if i dont need to ....

Re: 2g transmissions

^^+1. You will need to use the FWD axles, and the transfer case won't bolt up to it, since the bellhousing is different. It should still bolt up to the engine and bolt into the car though, as far as I know.

Re: 2g transmissions

No, because the case and internals are also different because of the extra stuff inside for the AWD.

I am sure you can put the transfer case next to the transmission. But as a Front Wheel Drive transmission is not intended to power anything but the front wheels, it lacks an output shaft and mounting hardware for a transfer case. Setting them next to each other is an option, but I doubt that is your original goal.

No they are not the same. One transmission is designed to power two axles (FWD). The other transmission is a FWD based transmission that also splits the power and sends it to an output shaft. From the output shaft it goes to the transfer case, sends it to the rear differential, and out to the rear axles. This is why they look similar as they are based on the same design, but a fwd transmission is essentially missing 1/3 the stuff an AWD transmission has in it.

A 1g DSM has 1 transmission mount on the vehicle. A 2g dsm has 3 transmission mounts. You are correct that they are chassis dependant.

Your best bet is to find another awd transmission cheaper. You could also put in a fwd transmission with a different axle configuration, but why even bother buying an awd chassis?
