Re: is 5 deg BTDC ok?
You should be able to do everything but the valve guides. It is pretty easy to do. The head and cams will have to come off and you will need a spring compressor. If you have access to a welder you can make your own compressor that works well.
Basically compress the retainer on the top of the spring downwards and remove the keeper (2 little pieces). The slowly release the tensioner and take the retainer and spring off. There will be a washer under the spring that you need to keep track of too. The valve will fall out now and it is ready to head to the machine shop once all 16 are done.

Pay someone to work on your car, it might be cheaper in the long run.

Re: is 5 deg BTDC ok?
I just bought a new head from another guy. It has a 5 angle valve job and has been decked and resurfaced, it has the oem valves and springs but they are straight. Plus it was only $325 shipped.

Since we're resurrecting old smart threads that Tom's started, figured I'd give this one a bumpiddy bump
