2G Brake Upgrade, '05-'06 Outlander Parts

I stumbled upon this. I was going to be redoing my brakes this spring and it seems like a cheap upgrade.

Supposedly 2g guys just need a bracket and rotors. I priced the rotor at $55 a piece (napa) and the bracket at $65 from the dealer or these guys..

There are several good threads on this topic, but I thought I would put this into a Tech Article with focus on weight and add some of my own photos.

One of the problems with upgrading your brakes, is that such upgrade is usually accompanied with increase in weight. Some aftermarket brake kits, like TCE, will gave you big brakes with reduction in weight, but not everyone can afford it.

So, until recently, “big DSM” brake upgrade was THE way to give yourself a bit more braking capability for budget conscious enthusiasts. Everyone knew that “big brakes” were heavier, but they just took it as inevitable.

05/06 Outlander brakes emerged recently as a better/bigger upgrade, but I want to add an extra merit to this conversion: you get more brakes, for not much additional weight!

To do this swap, you will need:
05/06 Outlander caliper brackets MR307282 and two piston calipers (Outlander calipers use 2G style of brake lines, so 1G guys will ether have to use 93/94/GVR4 calipers with these brackets or do some creative plumbing, to adapt the lines)
05/06 Outlander rotors (stock shields will have to be bent back)

That is IT! No other parts or adaptors!

I sourced my complete Outlander calipers at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market, most of these junk yards will ship parts for relatively low cost. And since you are already paying for shipping, find a place in the south, so that you get some rust free parts!

As for rotors, there are dozens of sources to get them!

its less than 1" diameter increase from the DSM "big" brakes... But still seems like a cheap and easy way to get an upgrade.

You don't need more brakes than you actually need need though. Otherwise you are just adding weight that slows you down. If you run shit brake pads and don't have cooling, then the rotors and calipers aren't going to matter much.

My brakes could be better, My colt had 3000GT calipers in the front and I could stop on a dime. I was gonna go through and do new rotors, calipers and pads. But if I can spend the dame amount of money and get better stopping power.

In a 17,000 lb car, an extra 20 lbs of weight is nothing. especially when you figure 20 lbs of weight is the same as 2 gallons of gas.

You also have to consider that's 20 pounds of unsprung, rotating mass. Both of those are areas where every pound counts.

This. On my last car (weighed 3800 lbs) I took out 45 lbs of rotating mass, and it felt like a totally different car, like it was magically several hundred pounds lighter. Rotating mass makes a pretty noticeable difference.

I do have a persistent problem of 'warping' my rotors - i'm not really sure why as I haven't pushed the braking system very hard, but i'm told it has soemthing to do with the fact the rotor is undersized. Maybe this will help. I've tried everything, new calipers, pads, rotors, etc.

I'll try to find it, but STM took off 10lbs of rotational weight and they picked up about 10whp/10tq (IIRC)

I always hated the stock brakes on my 2G, but I never tried anything but the old-style EBC Red pads that came with it...nice little upgrade though...not a ton of weight increase over the 'big' dsm brakes...can you get 'good' brake pads that fit this application?

Gain Of 12hp 7 tq. Just by a rotor swap.

Do they say the rotational weight you x4.

Example 10lbs= 40lbs rotational weight

I believe you continue to use the stock style pads for the bigger 2 piston caliper... so availability will be good.

While getting 12hp from brakes is nice, that isn't all that much on a ~400hp and the reason to upgrade brakes is NOT for horsepower, IMO. A loss of 12hp ain't much when you can stop a whole lot faster (though, I realize in that link he was in fact upgrading is stopping power, just saying)

Rotational weight makes a huge difference, even on a heavy car. I swapped out the factory 17's for factory 20's on my Tahoe and I noticed the difference in acceleration and braking immdiately. I'm willing to make the sacrifice for looks on that beast though.

Yeah I was gonna put rims on my Aviator but then heard its super hard on the tranny cause of the extra power it takes to turn them. It blew up before I could try it out though. LOL. But yeah SUVs deserve "BALLER" rims
