rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

So right now I pay 86 dollars a month to USAA for JUST my Miata.

I am soon to be adding a 92 TSI and checked with progressive just to shop around. It is only 60 a month WITH the talon.

What I want to ask is how much difference is there between what will be quoted and what I actually pay with progressive.

I dont understand because I thought USAA was VERY VERY comparable and was basically the best. Do any military folks know if this is true?

Please advise,

-Colin

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

I've had USAA the whole time and it been the cheapest route. I have 2 cars on it and renters and property. Plus i have bank account with them too and that makes it cheaper. I guess the more you have and the longer you are with them it gets better. If you got more questions let me know. my wife worked for them a lil bit and still knows a couple people.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

Give it another year and a half and your rates will drop. Or go get married. Having multiple car and multiple line discounts help as well. Sometimes just taking out a small life insurance policy with the same company helps drop everything. I don't know if USAA offers life insurance, but with State Farm my ex took out a life insurance policy to gain the multi-line discount. She paid $7 a month for the life insurance policy and it dropped her car insurance $10 or so a month.

They get you if you're under 25, unmarried or have tickets and accidents. Another thing that affects your rates is your credit score. Although, the longer you are with a company and build up a good relationship with them, the better the discounts will be regardless of your credit score. If they still won't drop your rates for these things, threaten to take your business elsewhere. Tell them you are shopping around and usually they will try and find "discounts" for you. I have State Farm and when I switched to them, my agent looked for every possible discount they could find for me. If you have a good agent, they will do these things for you. If not, I would look elsewhere. I've been with mine now for over 10 years and they have always treated me right. My wife has USAA and they have always treated her right too.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

Do you have any accidents or tickets? How about comprehensive claims? Progressive looks back and charges for accidents for 5 years, and any comprehensive claims over $1,000 will increase that quote as well. If you just ran a quote with out your driver's license number that could impact it.

I've been an independent agent for 8 years with 16 companies to write for and I can count the times I've been able to beat USAA premium on one hand. So, it does seem odd to me that Progressive would be lower. I guess you could just call and give them your driver's license number and then see what the quote is.

Good luck!

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

They ran my drivers license even.

I have 2 speeding tickets and a careless driving.

When I was doing the quote I added 3 DWIs and 3 more speeding tickets and it rose my insurance 18 dollars... That made me skeptical.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

I dont have any accidents or claims.

I have renters insurance with USAA and an IRA. I also had a loan with them and have been with them for 4 years now.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

That sounds pretty strange. I know that they charge 1 point for the 1st dwi compared to 3 for a careless driving. 2 points for speeding tickets each.

It should have gone up a ton with all of that in there. Something must be messed up. I've neve done a Progressive quote online since we have an agent version of it. I guess the only way to be sure is to do a full quote with your dl.

Edit: Ran you dl so it must be legit. Guess it's okay then. Their rates have been pretty competitve lately.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

I've always used USAA because nobody could usually touch their rates. So I pretty much quit comparing and have just stuck with them. I'm curious though, maybe they have changed and I'm just blindly still using them now?

Also, one thing I do know is that if you try to insure a recreational vehicle (boat, wheeler, etc) through USAA, they actaully farm that out to Progressive.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

See I always thought USAA was cheaper...

I just dont want to switch and them be like oh we can charge you all of these fees on top of what you pay a month to us.

Can they add things to my bill and not be entirely honest? Progressive that is.

I'm confused. Are you saying Progressive or USAA is cheaper in your case?

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

I used to be on USAA and, but when I bought the house I got a quotes from a couple places and Nationwide came in the cheapest. I triple checked all the coverages to make sure they were the same and it was. My Nationwide agent was suprised as I was and the USAA people were baffled, but couldnt beat it. So I left them. I really liked USAA but Its hard to pass up 400 a year between car and house insurance!

I would say make sure that your quote from Progressive and USAA is the same amount of coverage on every level.

It is the same amount at every level.

It is baffling me, like its one of those "too good to be true" moments.

Yeah thats the way I felt too! I have been with Nationwide for a year now and been very happy. USAA requoted about 6mo ago, and couldnt beat it still. I would like to get back through them so I will probably check again soon.

Re: rates.. USAA vs. Progressive

Ask insurance companies if they go by the offense date or the conviction date, it makes a big difference. I'm with Progressive through Bailey's "agent" and they go by the offense date. Which of course means its off the insurance record faster and you will get lower rates sooner.
