That sucks Scheides!

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
It has begun, your car is making the transformation from EVO to DSM :p haha
Good luck on getting it back together. |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Question #1: How clean does the surface of the block need to be? Am I close? There are a few spots that do still need some work, but the spots that still look like they have a bit of gasket material left on them are super smooth, can't even catch an edge with my fingernail.
Comments welcome please! http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8864.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8865.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8866.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8867.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8868.sized.jpg Question #2: what is the proper orientation of the cas? The cam pin is straight up, does the small side need to be up or down? http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8869.sized.jpg Thanks in advance! |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
The block should be spotless. Those areas will come clean. I use a 90* die grinder with a 3m pad.

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Honestly, if it were me, I would probably throw the gasket on the way the block looks now. Some people may disagree, but that's just me. Sure you can't get a scotchbrite pad to get the rest off though?
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Just verified that i do have the right cas orientation!
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Your pistons look purdy!
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
It runs again!!!
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Yay!
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
So is it possible to pull an IX head in the same way, leaving the cam gears engaged? It looks like you used a homemade cam tension tool. What is the thread size and pitch and how long does it need to be? I plan on pulling my head next week and it would save some time if I did not need to remove the timing belt. Good job on getting it back on the road.

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Good to hear its running again!

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Whew! What a day. I spent as much time running around getting stuff for this project and studying up on what to do as I have actually working on the car. We hit a few small snags but overall it was not the most insane thing I've ever done on my car. Having plenty of time to just let the car be down and live life was pretty clutch. I ended up getting a spinny 3M pad thingy that went on the end of a drill (or die grinder) and used that to finish cleaning up the surface of the block. It worked awesome, but some spots just would not come clean, so I *gasp* did use a bit of 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to finish it up.
Thanks a BILLION to Kracka for all the help and everyone else that gave me advice on how to do all of this! A MILLION BILLION to Shane @ DB, he gave me insane cool advice about every little question I had. So yea, it runs, but I haven't test-driven it yet. We hit a decent snag when I dropped one small bolt down into the depths of the lower timing cover, necessitating yanking the tbelt stuff all apart *again* and re-doing it. Practice makes perfect right? The bolt was for the small shield that wraps around the timing belt tensioner tool. I was trying to get it into place and after a few awkward moments and it not going in, bloop! Down it went. I got it out once with a long needle nose but of course it fell again just as I was about to have it all the way out. Anyways, the head did end up getting resurfaced, the new springs went in fine and cams fine on top of that. John Gosh, I offered him some extra cash to get it done quicklike and he totally delivered. I dropped off the head on Friday at about 3pm and he called me Saturday 9am and said it was done! Unfortunatly I had been at work until almost 3am so it was noon before I could get up and meet him. Got about 2 hours of work in on the car Saturday and about 6 today, and it runs! I left the accessory belt and associated pulleys off for initial startup, but aside from the fuel line needing to be re-pressurized (I knocked out one of the injectors from the fuel rail :( ) it started right up. It wanted to rev pretty high, about 2500 rpms or so, need to figure out why but it never go up to full operating temp at all, so I'll address that as I get the car the rest of the way back together. Stay tuned..... |

I did not make the tool, I got the AMS one. Kracka, hellomynameis, and I went in together on it. http://www.amsperformance.com/store/...roducts_id=794 |

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
I bought the Jay racing one when I did my cam install, and used it again when I did my headgasket, It worked flawlessly both times. I think Mark has used it a couple times as well.

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Well well, quick update!
Yesterday before finalizing putting it together, I tapped the intake manifold for 3/8 NTP. This will fit a GM IAT sensor (new ecu hack coming :) ) Filled it with a plug for now: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8871.sized.jpg I also got the block uber clean with a 3M drill/die grinder attachment, some cut-up fine grey 3M pads and even though I *really* didn't want to, I used some 600 grit wet/dry sand paper to get the last of the gasket material off. It came out pretty good: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8872.sized.jpg Bottom of head, resurfaced, assembled, and ready to go on: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8875.sized.jpg Buttoned up all of the timing stuff and finalized 99% of the details, left a few for tomorrow, but VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM test drive around my neighborhood with a few short 2nd and 3rd rips, got back with no drips, and put her to sleep: http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8878.sized.jpg Tomorrow night, full test drive, logging, etc. http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/390.gif |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
I'd do another oil change in short order unless you did an uber good job of plugging off and cleaning out all the oil drains.
Good to hear it's out on the streets again! |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Ooh thanks Ryan! I forgot to mention that! I drained the oil after I got all of the cleaning done and got a $12 jug of oil from o'reily's and put that in for the initial startup. The kelfords advise 18 minute break-in at ~2500rpms, and with dino oil if possible. I did just that, and after I shut it down I drained the oil right away, took off the filter, and let it drain for a good hour. Then, fresh filter and mobil 1 and the it seemed very very happy.

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Nice work!! glad to see its back on the streets

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Good work, Scheides. Let us know how the test run goes today!
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Might want to flush the coolant too?
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Good progress on getting her back up! Cant wait to see results from the new cams.
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Good to hear.
I also want to hear the new cams. |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
If it idles anything like the way your 280's idled, I'll love them. Hopefully they make more power for you

Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
"Indeed, at about $100,000, nothing can touch the M6 in terms of all-out performance and four-seat capability" -Edmunds.com
Heh, well I was planning on taking it easy on the car but an opportunity to play with an M6 arose today and I decided it was ready. I have turned the boost back up to 29 peak, and left the timing down 4-5* from my E85 tune I was on before. AFR's in the mid 11's. The guy in the M6 was shocked how I stayed so close to him (no honk, he kept just getting the jump....closed course, of course ;)). Needless to say the car is running like a freaking top. I had just tested out some 8000rpm pulls to see how it took it, and it took it like a champ. Power is still falling off up top, but I think it feels better than it did before, which was my goal. A little timing and then a trip to the dyno and I'll know for sure. Also, I got video of the Idle. These are the exact settings I had on from my HKS 280's. In the vid it starts idling a bit high, then falls down to ~900-950 rpms. Def needs some tweaking, but you get the idea! http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/2NIWlflgnTs/default.jpg Also, finished up the quasi-wire tuck last night. No more wires going over the top of the valvecover except for the spark stuff :D http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8879.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8881.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo-k...8885.sized.jpg Next up, winter wheels, snow tires, and a bishin undertray :) |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Kelfords are the shit.
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Sounds real perty.
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
It sounds a little choppier than it did with the 280's, but I'm sure it'll idle a little better with a little work. Sounds nice though! I'm glad to hear it's up and running so well :)
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Exhaust at idle sounds good.
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
my idle has been really high lately, aroun 1500 rpms, looks like its time for me to get a cable that works..
|
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Play with your BISS screw just a turn or two, might help.
Yea, good call kevin. Choppier. The 280's had a little longer bwap bwaap bwaap bwaap bwaap to them, these are shorter bwapbwapbwapbrrrrbwapbwapbwapbrrrr. |
Re: Head Games: pushing coolant and then...
Let's hear it go bwapbwapBWAAAAAPBWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA BWAAAAAAAAAA BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Bwwuuuuumm.
