1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Ok so i figure its getting close to the project start. Hopefully it freakin warms up soon. Unless someone has a nice garage heater they can borrow me. :)
Phase one is to get the car running with the least amount of pain and money possible. Ive decided against pulling the motor at this point due to weather/time involved. Will likely do this during the summer when i can actually think without getting a brain freeze. Phase One: - Pull head, Pull #4 piston, Attach new Manley I Beam rod. Attach to crank with new rod bearings. - Replace Rod Bearings for 1-3 rods to keep everything even. - Clean up engine bay wiring. Finish install of Crane Cams Fireball Ignition. (Decided to keep the ignition, if i decide to pull it later who knows.) - Retorque any bolt i see. - Hook driveshaft back up. - Verify car will start, run, and drive. - Pull seats, and carpet. Use carpet cleaner to clean carpet and renew its original cleanliness - Purchase and install new headunit (Just need a cheap stereo with a USB hookup) - Repair seat tears. - If Stephan cannot get the center console or back seat, i will be looking to puchase these along with the rest of the interior. - Replace front fenders. - Purchase and install Emergancy Break lever and anything missing there. Phase Two, will be after the wedding (July 3rd). This will be where the car turns from Fun car to fun and Fast car. - DSMLink V3 with GMMAF setup. - 900+ cc injectors - Large Turbo - Built Head - Cams - Possible Water to Air Intercooler - 255 Fuel Pump - Better Exhaust - Tune Tune Tune. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
I have a kerosene torpedo heater you can use. Pick up some kerosene at Fleet Farm, plug it in and you're set.

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Thanks Matt, looking forward to putting the garage heater to work this week. :)

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Addendum to phase 1. Also need to replace a piston. :( Its cracked right on the one of the holes that the wrist pin goes through. YAY.
Im about 99% sure the valves are not bent. BUT, and im doubting this will affect anything, The piston slapped the head and left a mark on the head where it goes flat on the intake side, the mark is very slight and there is no cracks there. I should really take pictures and post them up. The rod was really fucked up. |

Get that thing rebuilt, especially with your goals. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
i have a 6 bolt head if ur interested
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
What large turbo are you thinking?
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Where would be a good place to have it resurfaced? Like i said, its basically just a scratch where the piston hit. i think a simple resurface would probably make it look like nothing happened. This head has nothing to do with my goals. I would change that out for a ported 2g head.

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
GT37r?
Can we not use AMS fanboy names for stuff? T67? 67mm sized turbo? Why BB? How fast you want to go? Are you another swifty? lol |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
T88 or bust.
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
My last car i had a SCM6152e. I want something that spools faster and makes more power. Not sure what you mean by AMS fanboy, as FP makes one as well. I thought you were banned. Maybe i shoudl make you purple again. LOL
I have been a fan of big turbos since my Burnt white car with the 50 trim. I am not a big fan of the 16g heros :) |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
FP makes a 37r? I think you mean AMS, they are the ones who started that name for 67mm turbo. I couldn't find a 37r anything on FP's site.
50 trim, big turbo, hahahha. I'm just ribbing you so don't cry. Sounds like you have a fun beast planned. From what you say about the scm61, I think a billet 6262 would fit the bill perfect. |

Im not crying at all, maybe i have my numbers mixed up. And back when i had the 50 trim, the GT35r was a massive turbo, but by todays standards a GT42 is a streetable turbo. HA HA . |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Im compensating for something i think which is why i want big turbos....
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
kevin 1g drummer has a gt3076 dd for sale if you want to go that way
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
the turbo upgrade isnt coming until after july, so i can plan accordingly and get a wedding paid for. :P

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
As far as the piston meeting the head, you really should get the head checked out before you slap it all back together only to find out you have a bent valve so you can pull it apart all over again. Please do not turn this into an "I told you so" fest.

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
So when are you planning on pulling the rest of the motor apart to make sure the rest of the rods and all the bearings are good?
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Its already apart. While the orders are coming in for the rod and piston and the head is being cleaned up, i will be replacing the other rod bearings, with the new set i got from map at the beginning of this whole ordeal, retorquing the rod caps, checking torque on the rest of the bottom end, oil cover and everything on the timing belt side. Cleaning the oil pan thoroughly along with the oil screen etc. new filter all new fluids for the tranny and transfer case as well as the rear diff. Then when i put everything back together i will be torqueing everything to my spec. :) Cleaning up what needs to be clean.
Also i will be working on the interior a lot. The headliner needs to come down and be redone, the seats will be repaired, carpets cleaned thoroughly etc. Question: The car doesnt have a spare tire, and doesnt have the cover for the spare tire. Can i just cut the big hump in the back there out and sheet metal over it, or is there something on the other side of the hump. Ill check it before i do it but just wondering if there is something i should be watching out for? -Tom |

heres some carnage pics.
The picture of the piston you can see where it slapped the head, the top ring is compressed and wont come out. the other ones came out with minimal effort. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
The gas tank curves up, only about an inch of room between the tank and the trunk floor.
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Headliner was sagging and i was bored today, so i went to joann fabrics and they have actual headliner material, so i picked up some of that and some spray adhesive and fixed the headliner, it looks great. Ill post up pics.
In a week or two im going to order brand new carpet, probably go with graphite or black, because im planning on putting a set of 2g seats (if they fit) to replace the 1g ones. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
What kind of spray adhesive did u use?
I hope its good stuff, a lot of it seems to sag after a couple weeks. Why would u put 2g seats in a 1g? 1g are way better. I got my new carpet from some ebay company it was great fit just needed cut for the shifter, was only $110. |

I wanted to put the 2g seats in there because they are in a little better shape, and if i go with a graphite or black carpet, it would be more matching then the tan seats. Still not sure if they will fit but we will see. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
No pictures yet = fail!
|
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Nice, that name sounds familiar I think thats the stuff people were saying to use.
Also peter is right, where are the pics? |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Seats wont fit without a lot of modification. The 2g brackets are weird, all four mounting points are different heights, different than 1gs.

Pics!
The car is missing one of the sun visors so i didnt pop the holes in the passenger side visor area. The driver side visor i have to recover still. I first took down the headliner, and then used a welding brush (thick wire brush) to clean off the old foam padding. Then sanded it a little smoother and to clean the rest off. Then repaired the broken peices. I then sprayed the Super 77 and waited like 15 seconds to get it tacky. Then layed it down and smoothed everything. Then cut it out leaving a couple mm of extra to wrap a bit. Let her dry and she was good to go. The material i used is really nice, i was thinking i was going to have to get fabric and foam seperate but Joanns had the headliner material that the foam was on the back of the cloth. |
Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Why didnt you cover it in black? Lookin good though.

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
Looking good so far.
Tom, I swear you once said that you'd never own a 1g. :) |

I think tonight i may start ripping into the engine bay, getting the Ignition hooked up for the most part, and getting the new Prosport Boost gauge hooked up.

Re: 1992 Eagle Talon TSI Project
headliner looks good. Where is the special headliner fabric at Joann's? When I went there last year, I walked all over the whole store looking for the best fabric to use, and ended up just getting some felt.
Also, good idea using the 3M stuff. I saved a couple bucks and went with some Loctite brand adhesive, and it sucks, I have to redo it. I'll be making sure to use the best 3M stuff I can find. But still curious where exactly in the store you got the fabric. Because I'll have to get new fabric I think, and am willing to use something other than this felt, although the felt did turn out decent. |
