Should I torque or hand tighten my exhaust mani studs? If I torque them, what should I torque them to?

You *should* torque them, but I think most of us just tighten them by hand.

I would think it tells you in a repair manual.

I just tightened them to where I felt comfortable.

Nothing, I've got 18-22ftlb for the nuts and 40ftlb for the 4 bolts for the mani to turbine housing, but nothing for the studs. I might try checking the torque on the studs that are on the car right now and got with that.

I would think 56ftlb's would be way to much for a steel bolt in an aluminum head.

The studs into the head? Just turn them until the center part with no threads reaches the head and gets snug, don't overtighten because they'll strip out.

That method has worked for me in the past.

Just hand-tighten them and once it gets snug, give it a 1/4-1/2 turn to where you feel comfortable. Use some thread locker on it too.

What? I use anti-seize on them, not thread locker, otherwise they're a bitch to get out. Oh and RTV the bottom center one otherwise it may leak oil.

Snuged them all up and used anti-seize on all the studs and put red rtv on the center lower stud. Thanks everyone for helping me, glad I dident torque them down to 56ftlb gsxturbo98.

Sorry, I was confused as to what bolts/studs you where talking about...then when you were more clear I wasn't on.

RED RTV is the absolute worst shittiest RTV ever, says the Permatex brand rep. Shoulda gone with Ultra Black... And whats so bad about putting lock-tite on the studs? don't want them to back out... which has happened to me.

Exactly, I have had studs move around and tighten up more as I've tightened up the nuts onto them so I put a little dab of thread-locker on them and let it sit for about 5-10 min and then they are good to go. I've also taken studs out that have thread-locker on them and they aren't much harder than if they didn't have anything on there.

I believe the thread locker would just burn away, my studs don't move at all. I tighten them all up a tad and used anti-sieze, silver not copper but hopefully I wil be fine, I don't wanna mess with it anymore.

Does anyone know anything about the rtv on the center stud? Why do you need to put it on, is it some kind of joke or something?

thread it in a bit then the last few threads throw some RTV on it

I didn't use any rtv on my exhaust mani. Just make sure it's o2 sensor safe otherwise your o2 might go bad soon.

I also use thread lock on just about all my bolts and they are no harder to get off.

I thought the bottom center stud goes through an oil passage in the head, and it may leak if you don't use the RTV on it.

^never had that problem, nor have I ever had oil come draining out when the main is off.
