None of this is new. People have been trying stroker motors and big turbos forever. Some people go slow, some go fast. Things are a lot easier now though than before and the average person has a good chance of being able to run a big turbo successfully. A few years ago there weren't any msg boards filled with information. Nobody really knew which turbos worked and which didn't besides the 16G and 20G. Barely anyone had dataloggers or widebands or knew exactly what to do with them. There weren't any aftermarket parts to make the stock tranny any stronger. People are also more apt to run big turbos now becuase they are affordable. You can get a bolt on 50-trim for $800 now. Something like that used to run $1400.
