Engine Damage: Part Out or Repair?

Cylinder number one has ZERO compression, while the rest of the cylinders were at about 145. After I put the car for sale, it decided to start smoking in between shifts (blue/grey burning oil smoke). Over the last two weeks, it became progressively worse, and began to consume more and more oil. Oil and smoke would come right out of my crankcase breather filter... Plug in cylinder number one was covered in oil. I'm pretty sure the rings are shot. Should I part the car, or should I rebuild it? I'd still intend to sell the car if I rebuilt the motor. (I'm hopefully buying another 1g in a few days here haha). Essentially, it'd be easier to sell a running car than a bunch of parts and a shell....

Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: Engine Damage: Part Out or Repair?

I just ran a few numbers: I could realistically part my car out and get about $4000. It would cost about $1000 to rebuild my motor. I believe I could sell my car with a fresh motor for about $5-6000. Just something to consider.

Ahhh. Or I could just buy a built tranny, do a stock rebuild, and get my damn car tuned. And love it.

Find out what is exactly wrong first. Leakdown test is the next step. Probably not a simple fix but may be better that you originally thought.

Skrew a leakdown test. No matter what he does hes gonna have to pull the head. So kevin just pull the head and look at the hole in your piston or something. Buy Chases car and part this car out.

Do a leakdown test; try and figure out what the problem is.

I'm pretty sure the problem is in the bottom end, and if so I'm just gonna fix it, and sell the car as planned The end.

It was the bottom end. Take a look at this picture taken when we pulled the head. The side of the piston looked melted and all 3 rings were gone in that spot.

Re: Engine Damage: Part Out or Repair?

Why not search around for a stock shortblock? I've seen them for sale for relatively cheap. ~400-600?

Re: Engine Damage: Part Out or Repair?

Off topic, but does a lot of detonation on a piston top ruin a piston? I have a block here that the hg was blown on and it had bad detonation. I dont think any of the numbers are really even visible on the top of the piston anymore. It still has good compression and the wall looks fine. I was going to sell it to someone for cheap before, but his unlce who is a mechanic said it isn't good anymore. His uncle is also supposedly a dsm guy and couldn't do a 6 bolt in a 2g swap either because they are too difficult. I wouldn't really believe him.

Detonation will blow the ring lands. Check that, otherwise, if the piston tops don't have any holes, they just get peppered, no biggie.

Re: Engine Damage: Part Out or Repair?

How do I check that? Take it apart? It was when I had my many "good" head problems and it had over 150 for compression in that hole after the problem with one of the heads before putting a 6 bolt in. I never ran the motor after though. I just tested compression with different heads on it. The piston doesn't have any holes, but it was detonated a lot. (mainly salt now).
