water/meth injection your thoughts? and tech advice

I was reading up on meth injection and depending on your setup, you can push your pump gas octane to about 110. I was thinking isn't this a good option instead of buying race gas all the time (althought maybe more unsafe). I know c16 is about 117 octane rating, a little bit higher, but with water/meth mix isn't the cooling properties the advantage of using such an injection system?

Also, how much boost can you run on meth/water mix (lets say it's a progessive system giving you about 110 octane climbing to full boost).
Can Aem control a meth system to tune the progression?

The AEM can control the meth setup, most pumps aren't progressive though, you would need to add more injectors that get turned on in sequence. I don't think you are going to see that big of a jump with meth, probably more like 3-4 octane. That depends on how big you jet it, but you can get too much in there too and start losing power. I would check out some of the Evo forums, they seem to use it quite a bit.

Re: water/meth injection your thoughts? and tech advice

I have an SMC kit on my evo, and it works beautifully. 25psi daily, I've pumped roughly 25 gallons of denatured alcohol thorugh it in the last 6 months. The kit has a progressive controller with two built-in fail safes. Progressive control is directly boost related, and adjustable. At 10psi the pump turns on to ~40psi, and at 20psi it's at ~120psi (i.e. ~100psi against the boost pressure in the pipe). Failsafe #1 comes with a built-in pressure sensor in the pump. Once activated, I don't see the 'spraying' light unless the pump is pushing 40psi. Fail-safe #2 is a low-level indicator for the 1 Gal tank.

This is not the best kit on the market, but IMHO best bang for your buck for every day use and good longevity. Lots of people run methanol, but due to it being a PITA to obtain, I just go for the alky as it's nearly as good.

Lots of people run 28psi or so with this same setup and zero knock. It's a proven method for more power for several reasons: specific heat of water/alky/meth is waaay higher than gasoline, resulting in knock quench. A single M10 (10 Gallon per hour) jet is ~200cc's of fuel. I'd be maxing out my stock injectors right now (560's) if it weren't for the meth. It lets me push them a little further, giving me 93% IDC's on effectively 610cc injectors.

Lots of people put it in and turn up the boost. Tuning is REQUIRED in order for this 'technology' to be used effectively. Check out my thread in the projects section for pics of my kit.

thanks, thats the info i wanted. I really think it's a great alternative to race gas. I thought you could get meth anywhere you can get race gas (stations but not aftermarket shops)? Anyways i wanted to verify some info because i heard of some evo's running 33 psi on meth injection (of course tuned on progressive setup).

Yup, no problem. Of course, you need to realize that all of the reasons that make Alky injection work are all reasons to skip it all together and just run E85, but that has its own set of circumstances as well.

bump this. Anyone know where to get 100% methanol (or close to it 99%) in gallons not drums. Kaths has methanol but only in 55 gallon drum.
