What would cause an oil pressure gauge to not read correctly and cause the oil light to come on when accelerating? Is this normal for 1G DSMs.

How do you know it is not reading correctly? From what you are talking about, it is not a common problem. A common problem would be if the oil pressure gauge was not working (at all). Then all you have to do is hook the line back up to the sender. The oil pressure light never comes on though...

Sorry guys did not mean to break any rules. I updated my profile. It is 1991 Eagle Talon all wheel drive. I check my oil level and it fine. So when do you know your oil pump gear is finished. Thanks for the replies.

If the oil pump gear isnt working your car should seize... no flow of oil. What happens to the guage when the car is off, and when you start it up? That guage isnt really worth dealing over becuase it really moves super slow and just is a mojr warning if its way too high or not working at all.

When the car is off the oil pressure gauge is all the way down. If I put the key in the ignition it moves all the way up. Once I start the car the guage just goes down. At Idle the light stays off but at acceleration it the light comes on. I did open the oil cap and I see that there is oil on the cams like most engines when it is running. How accurate is the autometer oil pressure gauge? Hey eclipseturbo what gauges do you have in your car? I don't know if you remember me but we met in the parking garage in downtown minneapolis last week. I asked you about your exhaust.

if your gauge says low and your light comes on at times i would be very wary about driving the car. Your oil pump may be failing. However, it my be your oil pressure sending unit. Mine went out and my gauge would jump around for awhile then fall to zero, but my light never came on.

I only have a 1 guage, just a boost guage. Maybe the sender unit to your stock guage isnt working. There is a little wire that hooks onto your oil filter housing, and I beleive that is what gives signal to the guage.
Also I dont know about the light. That is just sensing oil pressure. I know mine comes on when you change the oil and your cranking for a while before it starts to get the pressure to flow through. Id say its just the sending unit. BUT I think that there is 2 senders, one for the light and one for the guage..

I would be very cautious. You oil pump may be going out. It may not be delivering enough pressure turning the light on. Not a problem I would be dricing around with.

You are correct sir. So if it is the sending units its got to be both at the same time, which is less likely then your pump going out. I would say get your pump checked ASAP.

Thanks guys for the replies. I found out why my unit is not working right. The guys who had the car before me had wired the two wires backward. I stop by QPR and talk to the guys. They metion that if the if the wire in the front oil sending unit gets unplug the light will go out. I had mention to them that on my car it was opposite. If I have removed the wire of the back sending unit my light will go out(the one closest to the driver). So I came home and reverse the wires and my oil pressure light is gone and the guage moves up about a 1/4 of the way. Can you say I am a happy DSM guy and can drive my car more. Once again guys thanks for the help. :toast:
