Need an opinion on trannys

Pretend you were in the market for buying a modded DSM. Lets say it has 450awhp on a DynoD. If this car had a stock tranny that worked great, would that have an effect on you buying the car?

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

Nope not at all. You can have that trans modified when the time comes for $1300 that will handle a lot more than that. if it shifts fine now don't worry about it till something happens.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

I would be a little skeptical, my car was making ~250 AWHP DD when my freshly rebuilt stock tranny completely granaded. The shitty thing about it was that it had maybe had 10-12 launches, none of which were even within 3 months before it took a poop on me. I was just doing normal driving making a 3-4 shift and it went BOOM. Next tranny I hope to buy will be a Shep/TRE/Jack's

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

Hell no, I would just keep in mind that it would be something to upgrade, but a lot of people are making that much power or more on a stock trans, some refuse to pay that much to build it.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

For that power level, you don't really need anything more than a good rebuild by Shep for around $1000, or you could splurge and get the 4-spider diff for added strength. If you can verify the current stock tranny is good as-is, there's no reason it can't handle that power already.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

Depends. If my goals were to make 600+ hp out of the car I was buying, I would put more efforts in finding a car with a built tranny if I was buying. If I was looking to keep it around 450whp, I wouldn't care as much.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

Id say it depends on the price. If you want alot for a 1g and I was looking it better have a built tranny. But then again just because it has a built tranny doesnt mean it will last. right Kevin?

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

I am considering just selling my car with a stock tranny, or even just a basic shep rebuild. Or if i keep it, a built tranny AGAIN haha.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

interesting. I'd probably not buy it because with that power, im sure the trans won't live to long. I'd say just get a rebuilt trans. I'd be more than happy with a stage 1 or 2 rebuilt.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

I'd say if you have someone willing to buy the car right now, and they don't mind it having a stock tranny, then go that rout. If you don't foresee anyone buying it any time soon, I'd just go with a basic shep rebuild with a 4spider.

+1 for that. Just a basic rebuild with a 4-spider.

^agreed.
How did you break a shep stg 3?
Hill is on a stg. 1, has been for a long time with over 500.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think Steve puts that many miles on his car anymore either.

Nor has it been pushed really hard from what I can tell.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

It comes down to how you drive, not just how much power you have. You could have 600hp and make a stock tranny last, or have 250 and grenade a built tranny. For a decent amount of drag racing, your example is probably starting to push your luck if you're going for good 60' times. IMO torque and how you launch are the two main transmission breakers, not hp so much.

Oh, for the actual question: A stock tranny vs built would have some impact. It wouldn't make or break the sale itself, but I'd probably be willing to pay a bit extra with a built up transmission; no where near what a built tranny would cost though.

Re: Need an opinion on trannys

Is Shepherd still building transmissions? His website hasn't been updated in over two years and www.sheptrans.com is a dead link.
