4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
so since my bottom end seems pretty much done, I need some input on what i'm considering doing.
Lor has a 2.4L bottom end for sale. How easily will this bolt into my 93 TSi?
What I know:
-I know a 6 bolt head will bolt up
-I know I will need a different timing belt
-depending if its a 6/7 bolt, I may need different head studs
-4G63 head gasket will work
Some questions I have:
-Will my power steering bracket and pump bolt up?
-Will my A/C compressor bolt up?
-Does it use the same timing belt tensioner, idler, tensioner pulley?
-Will it run on my stock ECU? I'm assuming I need a chip/tune
Anything else I should know about this swap? This will be in a daily driver, so reliability is key.
Thanks!

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
Everything will bolt up. The only difference in the block is the deck height and bore. You can use a 1g head no problem. The only thing is you will need a set of 2.4lt cam gears, and a 2.4lt timing belt. I've got a set of almost brand new 2.4lt cam gears from mitsu just sitting in the top of my tool box if you need them.

alright, but how about the tuning question? I assume it won't run well on the stock ECU.

How do you actually plan on mounting that motor in the engine bay? Yea, everything will bolt up to that motor, besides the actual car, unless it's a 1G 4G64.

Good call... Will the stock mounts not work on this motor? I guess I assumed the stock mounts would work. Did I assume wrong?

You should really do some research, this topic has been covered approx 9000 times since 2001.

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
Yeah, i spent about 2 hours trying to find some sort of comprehensive guide or answers to these questions, and I could not. Trust me, I searched. All I could find was bits and pieces, and not much directly related to putting it in a 1g.
now that I know motor mounts will be an issue, will be reading up on that.
If you have any links, feel free to provide them!
ALso, it is a 6 bolt 4G64, if that makes a difference.

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
If it's a 6-bolt then it might work, the more common 7-bolt 4G64s have a different motor mount setup that won't work in a 1G. You can put a 1G motor into a 2G easy, but not the other way around.

Yeah, that makes a difference. 6-bolt 2.4's have the required roll stopper mounts, so you're good to go. I'd probably visually verify just in case it's some oddball motor, but it should have them.

You can put a 2g motor in a 1g if you don't mind the motor tilting back and forth a bit.

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
heh. Please keep the flaming out of this thread, I really don't have time for BS. I'm 28, a mechanical engineer and have been working on DSMs and cars in general for a long time, I'm not an idiot. This is just untouched territory for me and the info out there is very fragmented to specific swaps. Mostly 6 bolt heads on 4G64 blocks, swaps into 2g's, etc.
I'm going to check and be doubly sure its a 6 bolt, but that is what Lor told me.

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
If the engine you're looking at is the one in the Spyder GSX partout thread, yes it looks to be a 6-bolt by looking at the pictures. It will bolt up just like a 6-bolt 4g63. The difference is the deck is 6mm taller on the 2.4; yes your accessories will all bolt up fine. You can either use the 2.4 DOHC timing belt (94 Galant GS), or supposedly you can trim the tensioner for more travel and use a 2.0 timing belt. If you use your 2.0 cam gears, they'll either be advanced or retarded 1/2 a tooth; not that big of a deal (I would probably retard both of them if you're running stock cams).

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
The short answer is yes, it appears it will work, and it's one of the best mods out there. I keep eyeing the 2.4 shortblock in the corner of my garage and thinking how much fun it would be with my current wimpy setup.

Re: 4G64 2.4L into 1gb dsm...
Lor, I had a little delay in the project. The rebuilt head I bought had to be shipped back into the machine shop I bought it from (In Virginia) to be fixed. I got it back a few days ago and the engine is now assembled. Probably will go in this week or next weekend. I'll let you know how it goes!
