I do not have a tig but I know a few people who do. That sounds like a pretty sage solution.

The nipple coming out of the t-stat housing is steel. Like JET said... He just crimped his and welded it shut.

You could do that, or put a small piece of round stock steel or small bolt in and weld it up with a regular mig welder. Anything is better than the rubber cap that is meant for vacuum vs coolant.

I suppose you could do it that way, it would just look like ass. I pulled that steel nipple out and threaded it, nice and clean.
