Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
All I'm saying is if you got $10 to $15,000 by all means build yourself a 2.4 and have a reputable shop do it or if your some seasoned vet of the game and really know what your doing WITHOUT SECOND GUESSING yourself. Dude is on a budget and for a DIYer its not what I would recommend a 2.3 would be less if a pain in the ass and would yield much better results.

yeah i hear ya, the 2.3 is definitely cheaper i was just trying to add that the 2.4 tends to get a bad wrap a lot of times. And dont worry me and tyler are friends so I knew about this awhile ago we're about 2 of 4 evos in the Mankato area so we talk lol

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
Actually the 2.4 is not more expensive. The 2.4 crank is pretty much the same price as the 2.4 block and crank, all the other stuff is the same, actually I think 2.3 pistons are slightly higher because of their 6mm shorter pin to deck height. I could be wrong, either way, it's a wash. But yeah, if your existing block is good, the 2.3 is definitely the way to go since you don't need the water pump adapter and you have the oil squirters.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
He has a MIVEC Evo IX also, so he wouldn't have to deal with making that work with the 2.4 block if he did a 2.3l and could run stock cam gears.

I agree with this, another reason I'd rather do a 2.3 even in my car, it sounds like with mivec might be worth going 2.3 too.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
You never mentioned them before, but most of you tools that come on here and try to spew shit never do refer to the sources you get your info from.
Still doesn't change what I said, and I'm pretty sure shane has a 2.4 in his DSM.
Funny I'm tired of ass-hats like you constantly showing up talking out of their ass, either way it will still happen until the car fad is way down the line, sadly its only behind MMA, gym freaks, and now guns plenty more guys like you will be showing up talking plain old garbage.

HAHA!! LOUD NOISES!!!
While I agree with the fad thing, from the people I know who have had 2.4's on Evo's, most of them have had headgasket problems. I personally do not know what the physical differences are, but for some reason they don't seem as reliable as a 2.3 or 2.0. I know Bryce went through 2 or 3 headgaskets in his MAP 2.4 in like 6 months, and a handful of others that have had 2.4's in their Evo's on evoMN have all had some issue or another. I really have not heard of the same issues with DSM's. There must be some physical issue between the g4cs and the 4g64 and the DSM vs. Evo8/9 heads that cause this. Maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in why this is.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
OMGZ I had to changez my tamponzzzzzzzzzz..
So did bryce say why the HG blew? or are we just going to say blame the 2.4?
Ok, so turns out in an evo, 2.4s are a bit more work, but there seem to be plenty of people doing it right, turns out a bit more to keeping it together than just throwing it in the car and thinking it works.
I agree with GH, would love someone with more knowledge to come in and explain why a 2.4 doesn't work in an evo.
GH to be fair, people with almost every damn variation of these motors have had them go bad, so to make blanket statement like that makes a 2.4 seem not as attractive, but 2.0s go bad and 2.3s.
I mean you can't rev strokers too high or they will explode with that hideous rod ratio of theirs.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
True. I agree. Is there some difference in head gaskets? That is my main question. I know I have heard from lots of knowledgeable Evo guys that 4g64's puke head gaskets unless you o-ring them.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
Yeah if leak down test is bad ill rip it apart and decided on a 2.3L
Probably do what someone said above light port on head. Would you guys suggest oem springs valves etc? Or something else so i can rev it to 7500/8000 SAFELY ? Will also be trying that 20G turbo. If valves are shot ill prob get aftermarket since oem are super high priced

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions
I don't know why people would have hg problems with the EVO vs DSM, they have the same bore size, spacing and the EVO head is very similar to the DSM 2g head, which I have in my car right now. I can't think of anything but surface prep or tuning that would pop a 2.4 hg.
