It would entirely depend on the guys put in the ring with the lion. If you put 40 average guys in there, the lion would easily win since the average person waits for someone else to solve their problems for them. They would stay out of the "main action" hoping the others would kill the lion before they would need to get involved. Of course the lion would already be dividing the group and killing them off as quickly as possible. The only chance the 40 humans would win is if they all had confidence in that fact and worked as a team to pin the lion down to where it couldn't fight back and kill it likely by crushing it's windpipe etc. It is one of those things, could go either way, but 8 out of 10 times, I would favor the lion to win.
