Re: Who paints..

I just like giving other painters shit, I paint by trade for AV ford. Your prices are right in line with mine. People don't realize how much materials cost! I had $1200 into materials to paint one of my cars! I tell most people your gonna spend $2000-$2500 right off the bat, not including major body work. Thats usually to R&I a car and clean up the little dings and such.

Re: Who paints..

$1200 in materials? Damn, you can get the paint, primer, sandpaper and even the sprayer for that. I did my 92 GSX two or three years ago, it cost me about $400 in materials not including sandpaper and such. That was doing just the outside, no jambs, no color change and two coats of paint and three coats of clear. It took me a full weekend including touching up little dings and stuff, about 20 man hours.

Re: Who paints..

I am pretty sure you couldn't get a Maaco paint job for 500 as far as what you want dont to your car. You are definitly looking at upwards of 4500 at a real shop and probably 2500 - 3000 in someones private work place.

Re: Who paints..

Sorry Swifty, didn't mean to get your hopes up..

As for $1200 in materials, The clear I used was top notch, It costs over $600 after you catalyze it and reduce it. That was for a 5 liter can, so I did have some left, but not nearly enough for another complete. And a gallon of Base coat was $400, This was to paint my car Spicy Orange, so the color was a little more spendy since it was a Zirillic pearl. But factor in filler, primer, sealer, reducer, tape, paper, sandpaper. Your gonna be well over $1200 in material. But you can use much cheaper products and get decent results.
