5 bolts on the x-fer case and a dead blow to knock it off, then slip it off the drive shaft yolk and use some mechanics wire(or whatever) to hold up the drive shaft so its not on the ground.

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

Grab a pry bar, and pry the front drive axels out of the transmission, get the transfer case off (the thing bolted to the transmission under the engine) and it's good to come off. In your second pic, that whole thing is the transmission.

no, transfer case is a separate unit from the tranny, it will be the unit the driveshaft is attached to, kinda to the side and behind the tranny sort of.

Here, look at this clutch install walkthrough for reference, maybe it will help you better understand what you need to take off: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/clutch-1G.html

plz buy a manual after this, it's well worth the $20 or so.

If this is a FWD, there is no transfer case.

You need to pry out the axles, and push or pull them away from the tranny. In your first pic, what you have circled are the axles. I'm assuming the link clean2g posted will tell you how to do this.

Your second pic is the tranny.

You do not have a transfer case at all(if your car is FWD, like you have posted).

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

Since you look confused make sure you drain both your tranny and transfer case fluids. Yes, both. Also you will need to remove your exhuast to get your transfer case off from under neath the car. Yes the transfer case got some weight to it so when you pry if off make sure you have a jack or something to support it so it does not drop onto the ground. If you are replacing the tranny with another tranny make sure you count you splines on your tranny or your transfer case is not going to slide on.

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

The Transfer case has to come off because it is attached to the rear drive axle

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

Which one did you remove?

It sounds like you are sill confused on what is the transmission and what is the transfercase. The transmission is the large hunk of metal pictured above. It's where your shifter linkage is at and both front axles come out of it (one on each side). It bolts to the engine and comes off by pulling towards the passenger side.

The transfer case is more rectangular and about 1/3 the size (just a guestimate). It is located more towards the center of the engine bay kind of behind and to the drivers side of the tranny. It is what the rear drive shaft attaches to. It bolts to the transmission itself and is removed in the opposite direction of the transmission (pull towards the drivers side).

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

ok cool..

I have to get the transfer case off still... but im stuck on this

Pull the hub down and pull the passenger axle from the transaxle. A pry bar must be used inbetween the CV joint and the transaxle to release the retaining clip on the axle end.

Where is the clip at?? and where do i pry??

Re: removing the awd system from tranny

You pry right where the axle meets the transmission. You should be able to wedge a crowbar or large screw driver in there and pry. I find a solid "pop" works well if you can keep it steady vs steady prying. This is of course assuming you have the hubs and axle seperated already. I can't tell by your post if you have removed the hubs yet or not. Obviously the axles will have nowhere to go if they are still attached to the hubs.
