What is the best knock sensor for my application?

I am going to be installing a new engine next week (if everything goes to plan) and I want to have a better knock sensor. Since the AEM is configurable in that department, I may as well use something that is known to work well, like maybe a 2G one.

But, if anyone has any better suggestions as to what I should use, I'm not "afferd" to re-tap my block for a non-mitsu knock sensor.

This be the cast iron g54b with balance shafts gone, a timing chain, not belt and probably other noise making things. What's best?

1G, 2G or Evo knock sensors are all tuneable. The 1G is much quieter though, which can be good and bad. The Nissan knock sensors on the KA24 and SR20 give low readings similar to the 1G. I am not sure how a Honda knock sensor would work on a DSM, the B-series Honda knock sensor usually max out from engine noise well before revlimiter, but those motors have a lot of valve train noise. The S2000 and NSX knock sensors work good, but cost $$$. I have tuned MR2s with the AEM EMS and GM knock sensor and it seemed to work decent, the voltages it puts out seem to be pretty high like a Supra knock sensor. You can get a generic Bosch knock sensor for probably $40-$60.

I use a 2g knock sensor with my EMS. But, then again i don't know if it's "too sensative"..

www.atsracing.com is an MR2 shop and they have an adaptor for GM sensors that might work for mitsu stuff, so that's why I was on that train.

From a tuning standpoint, what would one rather have - a high voltage reading or low? I know that if the signal gets too hot it can just max out and you'd never know, but too low and it's harder to tell if something is happening, right?

Ok, their kit won't work, the MR2 sensor is a different size. Mine is 10x1.25 thread pitch and size.

Is that what 2G sensors are?

Get a stock one for a 6g72, or maybe a 6g74. 91mm bore is close, and they are supposedly tuned for the bore size frequency.

Google "knock sensor bore size frequency" an see if you get anything good.

good info. I've heard that a 350 chev. piston is about the same size too. Some guy went to an autoparts store and searched through the list of engine rebuild kits to find a similar bore size GM sensor. I'd almost like to go with a GM sensor since I read it is supposedly more reliable. But if the 3s sensor is not horribly expensive and fits, that might be a better choice.

I doubt the thread pitch on the GM sensor is the same size, is it? FWIW, I run a 2g sensor on a 2.4 and AEM.

yeah, I might do the 2G. since I bet I could get my hands on one quick. But since it is based kindof on bore size,the 3s one might be better. I'll keep checking around, and if I can find a simple adaptor, the GM one would tickle my fancy more than mitsu.
