Engine Install(2G)

So I am almost done with my engine and I would like to know whats the best way to put it in? Do I mount the tranny and then slap it in? Have the intake mani and exhaust mani on? Or put it in with no accessories like that?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Engine Install(2G)

It is definately easier to put it with the tranny bolted to the motor, intake, exhaust turbo etc. Less of a PITA in the long run. On the same lines, you really should have the turbo, lines etc bolted up to the longblock before the timing belt is on then you can prime the oiling system with a drill motor and watch the cam followers to make sure the oiling system is functioning correctly with no blocked passages etc. It might seem a bit overkill, but I have found cases where it paid off to watch the followers. If you spend the time to build the motor, you should definately prime it before initial startup. There other ways to prime it, but this is actually pretty simple and it has the parts all have to end up on the motor at some point, just do it in the right order and it works out perfectly.

Re: Engine Install(2G)

If you have access to a rack and a lift table, bolt the trans to the engine and slip it in from the bottom of the car. Goes in very easy.

Re: Engine Install(2G)

All I have is a plain old garage and an engine stand and lift. You say to mount the tranny on the engine, how do you do that? Do you take the enigne off the stand and set it on the ground? I would think that if I put the engine in first then the tranny it would be easy. But then again I have never done this and dont know anything.

Re: Engine Install(2G)

Connect them on the ground or just above when you have the engine suspended from the hoist, it works pretty well if you have a load leveler to adjust the angle of attack when installing. It would be wise to move the bracket for the slave cylinder line out of the way as it usually gets caught on the tranny. Also watch out for the oil pressure sender as it will try to kill itself on the radiator core support.

Re: Engine Install(2G)

Yea definetly assembly it before you install. Its much easier than messing with the tranny ones the engine is installed. Atleast on a 1G it is... and they have more room under the hood than a 2G...

Re: Engine Install(2G)

I think 2g's are worse about putting the trans in seperately. Especially on an AWD.

Do you need to have the bottom mount for the intake manifold installed? Is it gonna fall off or something?

Re: Engine Install(2G)

Are you talking about the thing holding the intake manifold to the block? If so, you don't need it. For most people, it is just a big PITA if the head needs to be pulled again.

I've been working with/on cars at dealerships for 20 years now. One thing I've learned, engineers and manufacturers don't spend money on parts they don't think are really needed. It's all about the bottom line profit.

But, many people have run a stock manifold without it. But you are taking a chance of it cracking under it's own weight.

I'm with Vicious here, OEMs wouldn't waste a single penny if they didn't need to.But as stated, many vehicles don't have them and have no issues.Better safe, than sorry if you ask me

Did you use a clutch alignment shaft to line up the disc and pressure plate before putting it together?

Re: Engine Install(2G)

Something is not lining up correctly. Try using a wrench to turn the crank. See if it will fall in place.

Well, then take it back out and recheck everything.
