stuck valves or rings?

not perticularly a dsm question, but you guys are smart and nice, so il post...

16valve SOHC honda cylinder head...

2/8 intake valves are open, and im guessing they are stuck open... The car hesitates to start, and feels like its got really low compression because it has NO power, and blows LOTS of smoke out the breather tube on the valve cover. I originaly thought that this is blowby caused by burnt rings, but now that i see these intake valves are open, it makes me think...

aren't more than once cylinder's intake valves supposed to be open at the same time? is stuck valves making my car not run?!

Re: stuck valves or rings?

Did you crank the engine over to see if they moved? Depending on overlap of the cams, there should be one set open on intake and one set open on exhaust side pretty much all the time.

Re: stuck valves or rings?

Do a compression test dry at operating temps then add oil to the cylinder (like 5CCs or so) and redo the test. If the numbers go up significantly, your rings are the issue. If you think you have damage to a piston etc and you don't mind waiting till like maybe Saturday, I have a new borescope I have been wanting to try out. The light source should be here by then.

The head is off? You will be able to see if any valves are stuck open by either rotatingthe cam, or taking it out. How do the cylinder walls look? How about the valve seals?

well, the cylinder walls look fine, how do i tell if the valve seals are good or not? where do i look? All the valves seem to open and close, but it just seems weird that only one set of intakes open at a time.

Re: stuck valves or rings?

is there any way to see if the rings are good or bad without taking them out?

Re: stuck valves or rings?

Yep, down to visual inspection now. You might want to have a more trained set of eyes come check it out.

Re: stuck valves or rings?

ok, so its not the rings, or the valves or the cylinder head....
one of the pistions was cracked. I pulled it out of the block, and a chunk of piston fell on the floor, a long skinny piece that is in the middle of the top and midle rings...
